Default Rear deck wing really necessary?

So, after reading about complaints of the looks when the wing extends at speed, and the cost of replacement of the hydraulic wing parts on the turbo rear deck, I'm wondering if this is really necessary (functionally speaking, under 150MPH). The carreras only have the small wing that lifts up a little. The turbos are over 100 pounds heavier than a carrera. So, why can't you just replace the turbo deck lid with a carrera deck lid?

I am not complaining and I love my wing. I am always waiting when it would go up because thats my speedo, if its up, im driving above 75 mph and thats when the fun starts.

Someone somewhere was able to do it on (I think) a TTS:

I sometimes think I'd like the option, too. The sloping rear end is such a big part of the 911's classic lines. I've seen people scoff at the idea like it will unbalance the aero and you'll skitter off the highway the second you hit 60mph, but I bet nobody could actually tell the difference unless they're doing 150mph on a track.

Ahh, so I'm not crazy! I do like the looks of the 993 whale tail, but not so much a fan of the 997 wing. To me, it sort of looks aftermarket, tuner style...

I think the car in the above pic looks great.

I think of the wing as more tribute to the Turbo heritage. As others have mentioned, when the extension goes up, it’s fun-time.

For a cab, I think I saw somewhere a Speedster kit for rear decklid? If anything, I’d do that.

The "wing" sets it apart from other Carrera's. I like it and would not change it except for an Aerokit wing which is even more obvious.

Wing looks awful on these cars, ruins the lines.

I think the wing looks great on the coupe and better on the cab - helps break-up the swollen look aft of the top. Besides - this is a heritage feature, right?

Looks aside, I guess I was really just looking at whether or not it was functionally required. It's nice to get feedback regarding heritage and that it sets the turbo apart from standard 911s.

I believe when you switch to the carrera lid you still have a hydrolic system for the carrera wing, just trading one for the other I suppose.

Its functional. How functional? No idea.

This is from the 2008 Brochure underscoring updates for MY2008: "Equally impressive is the car's high-speed stability thanks to the automatically extending rear wing which maximizes highspeed
downforce on the rear axle for increased driver confidence."

The wing makes it a turbo, with the scoop of course.

If the wing is gone, it would look like a GTS.

Im not into aerokits and wings are for turbos and GT cars IMO.
