I think I would explore the 'front drive shaft changed and some other items' situation as far as possible. Im a serious DIY'er but a drive train problem on one of these cars could be a big cost.
I have to go back to the notion of getting a car shipped to you for ~$1,800. If that's doable I would not 'settle' for one that's not what I want and has been living in the salt spray for several years unless cost is the issue or other variables. Good luck whatever you decide. They are awesome cars

I am pretty OCD with paint, but what we have to keep in mind is with these cars getting older it is harder to find a super clean one when it comes to paint or mechanicals. Figure it was driven around 6k miles a year which is pretty low. Best of luck with your purchase, I would go for it considering the price.
