997 turbo Generation 1 engine noise
 

I am hearing a ticking (tappety) noise from the engine at idle. It disappears when rpm is increased. Any idea of likely source?

What is your oil level?

Hahaha welcome to the ownership of a Mezger motor. Continue your research, you will quickly learn that these motors make all sorts of ticks, taps and otherwise sound like a tin bucket full of rocks rolling around behind you. You will learn to love it.

A few things to consider..

Go over to the 996 Turbo forum and search for Intermediate Shaft noise or idle noise.. Similar components produce the same noise on both platforms..

I am running a blended oil mix for many years on my 997TT. Redline 0W40 and Redline 5W50 4 quarts and 4.5/5 quarts 5W50 The metal conditioning package and ESTER basestock has cut my noise down AND reduced my smoke on start up. From once every 7 cold starts to almost non existent. Blaskstone oil test has reduced my wear metals..

If you want to run a approved oil run the same blend with Mobil 1.. Motul has a newer SPORT oil 5W40 and 5W50.. I have run it in my 996TT.. Motul tends to run thinner vs Redline and Mobil.. You could run the 5W50 out of the jug.

My point is>>as the spring driving season gets under way>> it is my opinion that we should move to a thicker oil to prevent sheering to a lower 30W when the miles rack up.

Thanks Kevin, appreciate that info. FWIW I ran Mobil 1 5w50 for most of the last 5 years, and found it excellent. Last service was done by Porsche and I forgot to take in oil, and they put Castrol 0w40 in it - definitely noisier and the cold start clacking happens much more frequently. Told myself not to be pedantic and try it out, but I'll run a track day this weekend (to finally data log my car for your tune!) and then swap it back to M1. May try your blend recommendation.

I use Redline 0/40 in my newer S6 and the 997 (actually am about to change the oil for the first time). I had run 15/50 in my old I5 Turbo S6 for years with no ill effects, but currently am running Redline 5/30 in the older car now.

I have read mixed reviews on mixing different weights of oil. I wonder if a 10/40 from Redline would be a good intermediate choice rather than a mix?

Running a 10W is a poor choice in this engine. I have spoken to Dave at Redline and the base stocks and formulation are the same and blending 5W50 to net a 2.5W45 is acceptable. The idea or end goal is to have the low temp flow and higher weight to combat sheer. If you are in California, Texas, Arizona and Florida run the 5W50
Per Redline 0W40 site info: Better flow at extremely cold temperatures compared to 5W40 and 10W40

Hmmmm...I've never heard any odd noises in my 997TT but I do in the RS4.0

OK, just ordered some Redline 5w50. Do you mix before you fill or just dump in alternating bottles?

I assume Pennsylvania is an appropriate region for this approach on oil?

My oil change procedure is:

Remove the two fuel pump fuses, crank engine to purge fuel.

Drop oil.. Wait, and wait a bit more, then install drain plugs.

When refilling I pour two quarts down the oil filter canister reservoir of 0W40... This goes in two places.. One right over your oil pump sump intake and two>>prelubes the turbocharger and camhousing valvetrain. Side note: when you change your turbochargers you can purge the oil inlet supply lines by pouring oil in the filter canister/reservoir. Within 5 minutes you will have fresh oil coming thru the lines>then connect to your new turbochargers. The rest of the oil can go into the main oi tank reservoir.

Crank the engine over in 10 second bursts.. Watch the oil pressure build to 2 bar..

Install fuses and start..

I've been doing the RedLine 0W/40 & 5W/50 blend for 2 years now.. and my car seems to like as shown in my Blackstone reports.
