Default 997.1 TT tiptronic owners...happy?

Excited about getting back into a Porsche, after a few years with an F car that my Italian wife mandated I buy. In any case, with a bilateral torn meniscus injury and the fact that I now live in the midst of LA traffic, I am shopping specifically for Tiptronic turbo 997.1 cars. There are a lot of low mile nice ones out there, and the pickings are better than the manual cars which have a much higher demand. I don't plan on tracking it, and plan on using it as a semi-daily driver shuttling around my various offices (I am a physician.). I'd like honest opinions from owners or those that have driven them on the "joy" factor from the Tip TT. Thank you.

Oh and I must ask, can a tip be overreved?

Yes, I'm very happy with the tip but it did require a lot of thought before I made the purchase. I had two concerns about my car before purchase - it was a cab and a tip. I prefer the lines of the 911 coupe, but I knew I wanted the convertible experience during nice weather. Also, I had never owned a sports car that wasn't MT. The car was a fairly low mileage, one-owner car in great condition so I made the leap and I've been very happy with the choice. I occasionally miss the opportunity to row through the gears but I'm surprised that I don't miss the MT that much - I really like the linear feel of the turbo power at WOT and its very comfortable in traffic. Like you, I don't plan to track the car but do like a little stop sign to stop sign action now and then. There are those who would never consider a car without MT and then there are the rest of us. I understand those feelings - in my Corvette days, I would have never thought of buying an AT car. But, I'm 64 now and this car may actually be my last car - I like it that much. Best wishes and good luck with your purchase.

Most modern Ferraris have not been manual transmission cars for over 10 years; dual clutch automatic is the rage, just like with Porsche. I bought a 2009 Tip for my dad who has the same sorts of issues as you, and he really enjoys it. I drove it around for a bit, and the tip in the turbo is far more responsive than the one in my 2002 Targa. That said, if I was going away from manual transmissions altogether I might look into a turbo with PDK. It's superior to the Tip in almost every way.

I have a 2009 Turbo with the Tiptronics but I came out of a Boxster with a trip and my wife only wanted a trip so if she get the desire to drive it she can. I love the automatic transmission in my cars I have not owned a manual for a long time lol. I drive my car gently most of the time cruising with the top down enjoying life, can have a cup in one hand steering wheel in the other all the while living the dream, and I hear that over revving a trip is not that easy. and yes they are more affordable than the manual our little secret. Got mine for just under 60,000 out the door last November a 155,000 dollar build loving being in the turbo world.

I made a compromise when I bought my TT. I have always driven a manual car, I'm more happy I finally got a 911 turbo than I am it is tiptronic. Compared to PDK and newer automatic gear boxes the tip shows its age. It does not make the driving experience un-fun or bad. Just not as fun as a manual IMO. As evident by the fact I bought one, do not let a tiptronic keep you from buying, especially if its a turbo.

I too love my tip! 61 low miles and wife likes to drive as well. If your not going to track it I believe it's the way to go. I do like to shift now and then but not in the city! I just love the car period!!!

Well thanks for all the input fellas, went down and picked her up today. A real pristine example and I love the tiptronic on this car. I came out of a Ferrari 360 F1 hurky jerky replace my clutch every 12k miles car so it is all relative. This transmission is smooth and feels robust even in traffic, and I love just mashing the throttle and letting her go.

Car is 100% percent stock without even a bluetooth/ipod adapter added. Illuminated side sills and thicker steering wheel are minor touches which I actually really like.

Beautiful car. when I purchased mine I was 400 miles from home so first drive was a long one about 5hrs after the first 15 minutes on the freeway I knew I made the right decision.

Two hip replacements starting 10 years ago when I bought the Tip, plus SF Bay Area traffic before we moved. Happy with my choice and will likely not need to buy another Porsche.

07 TT with Tip, now 11 TTS with PDK. Tip good, PDK much better.

Really like my '08 tip. It's not as bad everyone states.

I have to agree, the tiptronic gets massacred by the press and other Porschephiles. But the more I’m driving this car, the more I’m impressed by the system. I use the buttons right for up and left for down to simulate a paddle and the shifts are not nearly as slow as I was made to believe.

wow that is beautiful. GMG Springs?

I've heard that selecting Sport Mode makes the Tip come alive, and makes the driving experience much more exciting.
