Default Battery Tender question

I just got a new Battery Tender Plus and want to leave it on this winter. Where do you guys ground the charger? The instructions say not to ground it to anything that touches the body panels (although they're aluminum anyhow so I don't think it matters). I don't see anything else in the vicinity that looks ok to ground to. I suppose I could run a cable under the car but wanted to check here first. Thanks!

I've always just hooked the red to positive and the black to the negative and plugged into a surge suppressor. Am I missing something?

You can use the following Battery Tender harness. There is a small removable cover on the lower windshield trim. It allows me to have a quick disconnect without opening your hood or in cabin connection. Battery Tender 081-0069-6 Ring Terminal Harness

I go directly to the battery. I know many uses and have never had issues with the 12v outlet. It just goes against my grain as it is through a wiring harness.

Why go through the trouble when a $10 harness lets you easily hook it to the cigarette lighter.

Don't know if I mentioned before. If so, sorry for the repost. I used a Porsche Cig lighter tender about 5 years ago. I live in Colorado so when I put the cars away in November, they get covered and don't see daylight until spring. As mentioned, I used the lighter method, covered the car and it went into hibernation. In the Spring, I uncovered the car, opened the door, unplugged the cig lighter, turned the key and nothing. Sometime during the winter, the tender gave up the ghost only I didn't know it. Now, most of you know the routine. The hood won't open so you need to get another 12V battery and hook it to the fuse jumper and ground and try to open the hood. It's not too bad if the cars not locked but if the car is locked and the window closed well, it's a PITA. All this because I couldn't see the cig tender light while the car is covered for winter. I now use only tenders that sit outside the car. I have 9 cars and 2 motorcycles in the garage on tenders so about every week I walk around and take a quick look at the tenders to make sure the charge lights are on. It takes me all of a minute to walk around.
Maybe most of you are more disciplined and uncover your cars regularly to check the charger. I don't so this method works for me. Hope this help's.
