Default Help with identifying markings on 911 window

First if I have posted in the wrong section please let me know where to go. I'm new to forum posting and new to this forum.

I'm here hoping to get some help. My husbands' birthday is coming up, and I'm wanting to purchase him a 911S. I have about $50,000-$65,000 to spend. I drive a 2018 Macon S and love it!

Here is my dilemma... I found a 2005 911S, but I think their asking price is too high. It was just traded in, the body looked rough, not banged up, but just a dirty car (with a few scratches) as if it hadn't been washed in weeks. There has been 5 owners. The sales fellow has told me that he has had calls from all over the US about this 2005 911S. I drove by this afternoon, and it's in line where it goes to be inspected by the dealers' mechanics I assume, and it had some strange writing on the window. I had my brother come with me and take a picture of the window. He is a corvette fanatic and knows nothing about Porsches. I've attached a picture of the window. Can someone try to help tell me what the writing means?

My husband used to drive a 930 factory slope in the 80's, and I think he is going through a midlife crisis, so I'm trying to surprise him with a 911S that I can afford. A 930 I can't do, but maybe this can be something to brighten his life up a little.

You're a wonderful wife!

I'm not sure what the window markings are exactly, but I'd say it's unlikely a "rough" 2005 911S Tiptronic in that price bracket is getting a flood of interest. The 2005 was the last year of the engine design prone to catastrophic IMS failures and they just generally aren't hot in demand like some other 997 models. (My suggestion honestly is with a $50-65k budget to look at 2009+ cars since they are significantly updated and better in every way.)

Don't fall for the sales guy's lines if he tries to make it sound like he has buyers lined up across the country.

Agree 100% with the above post. Walk away, there are a lot better more reliable late model cars available within your price range.

Have you though about getting him a well documented 996 turbo coupe with a manual transmission? Because he previously owned a 930 he'll be very happy (IMO) with a turbo vs. a normally aspirated Porsche. But that's the "guy" in me speaking!

Thank you all for the help. In regards to the 996 turbo coupe with a manual transmission, can you pick a used one up for under $60,0000? Yes, even today he talks about his 930 as if it was yesterday and one of the biggest regrets that he sold it. It was paid for in full and even his brother told him that years later he would regret selling it. I know if I can find him the right Porsche he would be one happy man!

Is there a year to stay clear of? I think he would love an automatic. His 930 was a manual.

My suggestion is first check the "vehicle marketplace" posts here on Rennlist. I've found Rennlist owners to be very honest and willing to help. I'm not very familiar with the 996 turbo but if I was looking I would start with a 2006 (last year I think). I've heard good things about them and, they are slowly appreciating in value and collector awareness (just like a 930).

I would also start a new post on the Rennlist "996 turbo forum" asking for help.; you'll get a lot of it!

Plenty of nice S models around. Here's a nice guards red S cab w/ only 10K miles:

(no affiliation, but I've seen the car in person, and its practically new)

Probably get if for about 70, which is a little more than your budget, but you pay for what you get.

Also, you might want to post in general 997 forum, as this forum is the 997 turbo forum.

I'm betting the dealer bought the car at auction, not a 'recent trade in' as they claim.

Absolutely! 996 Turbo's have definitely seen a bump in price over the last year or two, but very nice cars can be had from the upper $40's to mid $50's. Some sellers asking really high prices for low mileage examples ($60K, $70K, and more) but they seem to never sell at those prices. Occasionally you can find a decent car at or under $40K, but they are becoming much harder to find unless you are ok with very high miles, salvage title, significant accident history, etc.
