Default What is this noise? SamboTT, maybe you know?

What is this rhythmic/repetitive noise/clunk? Some 997TTs seem to have it and others don't. I understand that Turbos don't sound awesome at idle, but still I'd love to know.

I can reassure you I hear this clunk/tap from some but not others. (My Indy shop thinks I'm crazy)

Here are some videos.

Here you can here it between 0 - 3sec mark, you can keep skipping back and really hear it well at idle.

Here you can hear it at idle 0-3sec again and then as he modulates the clutch to take off in 1st gear.

On this one you can REALLY hear it between 6 - 23sec mark.

And in these two sound silky smooth and no tap/clunk repetitive noise, weird!

Cam chain maybe? It's noisey as hell, especially when warm.

My turbo has the same noise, albeit not as audible or noticeable as those first two video; as does every other 997.1 turbo I've ever seen in person. On those 2nd two videos without the noise, it could very well be that the microphone and or positioning just wasn't picking up that sound. I do think you can faintly hear it in those two videos as well, just not as apparent as the first couple.

I believe that is just normal valve train noise. Perhaps a different oil quiets it down a bit, but I don't believe it is cause for any concern.

FWIW, the first 2 videos with the Kline exhaust are my car...LOL. Vids were from 2.5 years ago and the engine has been running just fine since.

Hey guys. Anyone feel free to reach out and I can go over details with you. It's a few things. The timing chain tensioner's do make noise on most of these cars but also the VTG turbo chargers turbine veins do kind of jangle around like a set of keys at idle. Depending on the exhaust, mileage, temperature etc. it can be louder on some. Even new 991.2TT's do it.

Interesting & good to know!

TypeRx, Funny that's yours! Must drive you crazy in the parking lots and the city no? As I crawl through the traffic the clunk noise is bouncing of off walls and cars... It drives me crazy.

The videos posted were before I took ownership of the car. In any case, no, doesn't drive me crazy at all -- don't really hear it when driving. And if I am behind the car and it is idling, the exhaust is more prominent so that is what I hear. TBH, I just consider it a normal noise with this engine (which isn't the greatest sounding anyways)

My car idling sounds the same way in video three. not as loud but I can hear it. it goes away over around 2000 rpms. I think it might just be a little chain noise or tensioner. I also get a little quick chain rattle on cold starts sometimes. When I first got the car it bothered me cause normally cars dont make noises but from what I read some guys have it and some dont.

The way I drive the car if it was going to be an issue it would have showed it face already

I took a video just now of a completely cold start (engine lid was open, but that doesn't really change things). I hear a somewhat rhythmic knocking (most apparent 35s-43s) every now and then but again, I don't think it is anything to worry about. These engines are simply not great sounding...LOL.

Interesting, I definately hear it but it's so faint in the video.... maybe because cold?

My noise is very faint when cold and loud when car is hot. Probably oil thickness... or maybe drivetrain actually maybe DMF.

Oh well, the car runs great. If I can I'll get some videos.

I've grown to quite like the sound of this car. That familiar bucket of bolts crashing around and disgruntled sound of a cold start is almost comforting!
