LOL, I've always thought the engine sounded angry when starting - like its unhappy about it but now that you have awoken it, it's going to do it's duty.

Mines always made that noise. However, I replaced the MAF sensor two weeks ago (for a different reason) and it's much quieter now to the point you really can't even hear it. I don't understand the connection, but I'm happy that it's changed.

Well, that's weird and how could the two even be related. Interesting nevertheless and glad it's better now haha.

In your case all I can think of is you didn’t get the oil you asked for/expected.

I switched to 5W-40 and now I’m on 5W-50 Mobil and it sounds awesome… well, when it’s fresh it sounds “awesome” where it’s not as bad. As oil thins and gets older the sounds definitely starts to come back.

Again, in your case, I think you got thinner oil or a different brand you previously had.

First of all, MERRY CHRISTMAS 997 Turbo forum!

87k miles now, custom BBi Autosport tune and x-pipe catless exhaust, car runs like a scalded cat, and my car at idle sounds somewhere in between all of the videos posted. Cold starts are silent, but as things warm up the noise becomes more apparent and only between idle and around 2000rpm. I've been on this board for 12 years and this engine noise debate is as old as the GT1 Mezger motor. As you guys already know, with the GT1 derived mechanicals, it's been well documented that it has something to do with the intermediate shaft gear and crank gear having too much backlash-although harmless. Some are louder than others. Some spend $20k on rebuilds trying to get rid of the noise only to be dissapointed that it's still there. For some it's been unnacceptable to the point of selling. For me, like many, I've gone from hating the noise to just accepting it as a "race engine" reminder. It's kind of like the 1 in 20 engine starts where you get the (wtf) cloud of smoke. It's just another "feature" of the Mezger motor, lol. Just drive your cars folks.

I would agree this noise is slightly different than the typical metallic rattle of the Mezger. I have followed your thread and have wondered if this noise was in fact just coincidental with all the work you just had completed. This noise wasn't present pre plug and coil replacement, correct? If so, think of something, anything that could have been disturbed while doing the aforementioned work. Does this noise increase with revs? Does it get louder or dissipate with revs? Is it consistently there on cold starts and when warm? Almost sounds like a heat shield or pulley rubbing on something. The noise sounds very consistent.

Thank you for the response. The noise was not there before the maintenance. The noise increases with revs. After a certain revolution you can’t hear it anymore because the regular engine/exhaust noise takes over. The noise comes alive after the initial revs of a cold start settles. The car has 68k miles. No CEL, perfect oil pressure, no vibration. Also, the oil was analyzed at the time of the oil change and it came back very good, with low metals content. The car runs fines. It’s just the noise. Thanks.

Just listened to my buddy’s engine for comparison.

No, your noise is not normal Mezger engine sound.

I would bring it back.

Robocop305, any follow-up on your noise after taking your car back to the shop that recently serviced it?

I took the car to another mechanic. He is almost sure that the noise is coming from a spark plugs or two that was not properly torqued. The noise started a few days after the spark plugs and coils replacement. It’s a big job to get back in there. I will probably go back to the shop that installed them and see what would be the next step. Thanks for asking. I will keep you guys posted.
