997 C2 vs GT3 Engine Differences
I know this has been discussed before and it always ends with "wet sump" vs "dry sump". Other than that what are the major technical differences between these 2 engines? I love the character and high-revving nature of the Mezger and the fact that because of its race heritage is a somewhat modular platform which easily accommodates rebuilds and bore increases. On the other hand, can a 4L built C2 motor with upgraded sleeves, pistons, rods, and cams compare? Spirited street use and occasional track would be the intended usage. What is it about the Mezger engine that allows it to rev so high while even a built C2 motor can barely touch 8K? Thanks in advance for your input!

The 997 Carrera has 2 different engines, the one based on the 996 M97 and the new DFI engine. The GT3 engine is based on the air cooled/GT1 engines. Yes overall design is similar, but all the materials are much stronger and of quality in the GT3 engine. Going into detail will be a long thread, basically its a split crankcase, high compression ratio, titanium rods(higher RPM), whole top end is different, oiling lubrication system, hand built compared to normal engine assembly, less modern design with more moving parts, gearbox is from the 993 GT2, a lot of parts are still labeled as 964 parts compared to any Carrera engine. THE LIST CAN GO ON FOREVER.
In short... no Carrera engine can match the GT3 engine, and they are based on 2 completely different base not like the 991 GT3 vs C2, yes you can probably make more power if you stroke it out to 4.3 Liters, but the engine response and power delivery is on another level. If you just do street then just stroke your engine out and feel the TQ.

keep it simple about the only thing that is similar is the fact they are flat 6.
the parts lists are entirely different.
The 996/997.1 carrera motors were never campaigned in motorsport
JUST NOW the 997.2/991 9A1 motor is getting into motorsport.
So there is some similarity with the 997.2 motors now
Not only is the motor different: engine, trans, clutch system, most of the suspension parts, shocks, its a long list.
My advice, sell the car and buy a GT3. You'll be in for more building it. And never will be a GT3.
