Since 996 cup cables are no longer available, what are replacement options? And, if the 997.2 GT3 and 996 cup shifters are identical, where does the connection problem come from; the hardware attaching linkage t shifter?

Thanks!
So this is my plan. I bought the function first internals kit for the factory shifter. Good improvement to make shifting solid. Since cup cables are no longer available, I am considering the numeric cables only. I think the shift box for our car is overkill.

With the FF internals and numeric cables, the shifting will be a significant difference.

Side note: If you don’t want to install new cables, FF sells solid end links for the factory cables that connect to transmission. Consider it a middle ground mod b/w a stock setup and cup/numeric cables.

Agreed! The FFP Shifter Cable Ends replace the rubber ends of the factory cables with aluminum/Delrin machined components - see pic below - it's a great solution for performance street driving and DE prepped cars. For an all out track car or race car build, a full cable upgrade may make more sense to attain a more bulletproof setup.
FYI, these are currently only compatible with the 997.2 GT3 cables. The 997.1 GT3 cables are the 996 part number, which use a different cable end design.

Regarding the OEM shifter unit...its predominant weakness is the pivot points within the unit, so our SHIFT-RIGHT Solution addresses those by replacing the plastic/rubber bushings (.1 GT3) or aluminum bushings (.2 GT3) with aluminum machined pieces and proper hi-load thrust ball bearings to entirely dial the flex and play out. The shifter yoke, which translates lateral shift lever motion, is also an upgraded hard-anodized aluminum piece that rides on ball bearings.

Do you plan on offering cable ends for the .1 GT3?

After reading about the various shift kit options out their, I ordered a GT3 cup shifter 000 044 700 26 with 25-33% shift throw reduction and the Function First Shift Right kit. Cup SSK $315 + FF Shift Right $295 = $610
The cost is ending up almost the cost of the numeric unit. Has anyone tried this combination? I read good things about these individually but have not seen anyone use them together.

NLA since 2017. Cup shifter is a basic 996 shifter with metal bushings. Nothing more, nothing less.

I was misinformed by Pelican. I will go a different route.

@powdrhound 6 years later may be a bit of a stretch but any chance you still have that extra set of cables? Or provide the part numbers? Going through the same thought process for my .2 GT3 shifter (I ordered Numeric shifter, OEM .2 GT3 cables (p/n: 997-424-041-10, recommended by Porsche parts department) and Function First cable ends). I have a tough time getting from 2nd to 3rd at redline and it may be a synchro issue but trying to refresh all the other parts before I tear up the transmission.

Thanks, Luka from FF, for all your information and support to date!

I have 5 sets of these cables and shifters left but since they are NLA I’m hanging onto them as spares for myself.

Have you check the bushings on your transmission mount? Those fail over time. 2nd to 3rd red line shift is know to be difficult on out cars. Especially when the synchros are worn.
