964 Turbo 3.6 - would you trade
I have been offered to trade my 997.2 GT3 for a 964 Turbo 3.6.
I haven't seen the car but assuming it is in perfect condition like mine, would you trade? I am sceptical on the driving experience of the 964. |
Straight trade? Yes, absolutely. Then immediately sell the turbo and buy another 997-2 GT3 and a 993 (or 964) with the remaining $100+K. You will even have money left over for go-fast mods on the antique :)
In the US those turbos sell for a pretty penny. But the driving experience isn't what you'd expect from a $250K+ car frankly. :cheers: |
I am in Europe, prices are lower and spread isn't that big.

The 3.6T is an appreciating car. From a $ perspective I'll take a straight trade any day of the week and twice on Sunday's.
Have a 3.6 myself and it's really chalk and cheese. You won't get remotely the same driving enjoyment coming from a 7-3. But I get a kick out of admiring the curves of the w/b 964. All down to what you're looking for. |
the 3.6T in the states is in the 200-350USD asking price range depending on the mileage and condition.
the 997.2 GT3 is a 120k car. that's a massive spread here. |

I am more after the driving experience than the antique feel although to be honest stepping into the GT3 world was more a consequence of 964/993 Turbo prices rocketing than love at 1st sight. I just thought I need to get one before they call for more $$$ than I want to spend on them.

I found the experience of driving a 993tt very underwhelming after coming out of my GT3. Granted, it's wasn't a 964T, but I expect the experience to be a big letdown.
As stated, buy it to sell it and then get back into a GT3. |

Like the others said. Financially as a trade it's a do. However, I am not sure how many guys wake up in the morning and say, God I hope I find that 3.6T I need for 300k or better. In other words, plenty of lofty asking and I imagine actual bids are fickle and far between.
I think the air cooled turbo cars (and air cooled but to lesser extent) are the poster child of irrational exuberance. Ok a flat nose flachenblow or whatever it's called is a different thing but 4 spd 930s for 120 and 993tt for 300k is insane. Correction is coming. Gt cars in my opinion are totally different. These cars are modern by comparison but feel old school. There is a difference. They are not too old where they have constant needs (or restoration) or in that the new cars completely blow them away. They are still the car to drive and enjoy right now. You want to be the old guy who says yeah check it out and quote some 20 year old article or just drive like a maniac and enjoy every minute? You choose |

As stated, buy it to sell it and then get back into a GT3. I would take the 3.6 in a heartbeat. If nothing else drive it for a year or two and check the box. These may be in a bubble or maybe they were just undervalued for years. All aircooled turbos look awesome in my opinion. |
