My first NT01 experience...

I ran NT01's for the first time today. I was lucky to find 305/35/18s but couldn't get 245's and had to settle for 235's. My experience today isn't a fair comparison because I just finished a set of Hoosiers a couple weeks ago. I like the economics of NT01's but leaned on the track today they are not Hoosiers!
The rear of the car felt like it was planted and had a lot of grip, but the front had all kinds of understeer going on that I haven't experience before on Hoosiers and MPSC's. I felt like I was fighting the car pushing through turns all day long. Again, I've never had that much understeer before. I would bring tire pressures down to mid to high 20's but they would get up to 35-36 by the end of the session.
Besides going back to Hoosiers (which I probably will), any other suggestions? I can't imagine 235 vs 245 making that much difference, but maybe it does?

Here is a quick clip (bad quality - sorry) of Turn 8 at Thill today. I can't blame this one on tires (but I haven't been off track in while)!

Where are your bars set?

Protocav 08-22-2014 09:39 PM

I think it is common to expect to have to make small sway bar adjustments when switching between tires of this magnitude. Could possibly be the 235 fronts or the wheel offset/aggressiveness.

Stiffen the rear bar or soften the front

+1 also the 1st few heat cycles on NT01 sorta suck. Very slippery then they come into their sweet spot

Full soft front, full stiff rear embrace the rotation and $$ savings.
The extra safety is just an extra benefit :-)

Just put your fast lap in before lap 5 because it's down hill from there.

Put 50-100 street miles on the Nittos before tracking them.

Wear them in. Nittos will only get better, unlike Hoosiers.

^ THIS

and day 3 of NT-01 is not slower than 3 HC hoosiers.
you need a bit more throttle steer with nitto vs hoosiers.

and if you are friendly...... someone may have 245 ;-)

Agree with everyone hear. I find it is most important to wear in the NT01. 1st track day is not going to have fast laps. If you push the NT01 from new and over heat them you can stress the tire too much and get tread seam separation which is a line across the tire.

I always put 200 street miles on my NT01 and drive 7/10 1st track day. From there all is good.

Check your sway adjustments and camber. Hoosier R6 will need far moser camber than Nitto NT01. If you have too much camber for the NT01 you will not be putting all the rubber to the ground.

OP, turning in too late for the speed at which you were going through turn 8 is what caused the spin, but you probably already knew that. ;)

Interesting. I have had this happen to me 2 tire sets in a row now.

You guys obviously know a lot more than I do, so thank you everyone for the constructive feedback. It sounds like I needed to get the first few heat cycles out of the way. I will make the adjustments this week and go full soft on the front and stiff on the rear. I have a day coming up at TH in two weeks and will report back on a hopeful difference.

. . . and yes, orthojoe, way too late in turn 8!

^u may want to rethink the full soft front and full stiff rear. It's full on oversteer. My old 6 was set up like that which don't mind but lotta my trackbuds hated how loose it was. You have to be quite skilled in steering corrections. Mike

That is good advice. Make 1 adj at a time take it out and try then adj as necessary.

Mike my 6GT3 ran full stiff front and 1 off full soft for track. Car was neutral but then again this is with MCS 550/750# springs. AutoX stiffen up the rear for rotation.

Good point! I will make the adjustments incrementally.
