Funny, I thought the same thing until I saw my M5 parked next to an older M6. The basic design is the same but my wheels are more like a diamond cut face with anthracite side spokes and the outer rims, they actually look quite different in person side by side but you're right about the general design.

I'm driving a 12' E63 and I love it. I came out of an 08' M6. Before that an 06' E55 AMG, both of which were fun but not entirely satisfying.
This AMG is a different story. It has handling, precision and feel that both prior cars lacked. I find myself telling people that what BMW M was is what this AMG feels like now. The scripts have been flipped. But this car has just insane power. I chipped it 3 mos into ownership for like 1300 bucks and its making something like 690 hp and 700tq. It can be as docile as you want but when you get into it, its just warp speed or as my uncle called it when he drove it one day, stupid fast.
I prefer the looks of the 12' models for the angular front, the vents ahead of the front wheels and the traditional star. You can easily change out the grill for a star/non star. I changed mine for a stock grill in black and blacked out the rest of the chrome.
All wheel drive should make this car even better and the reviews I've seen claim that it takes nothing away from the feel. Have you seen the Motor Trend video from last week?

690hp and 700tq in a DD. I think I would purposely move to a place where I have to drive on secluded roads for at least 30mins every morning if I had a car with that much power. room enough for 5 and trunk space, what more can you ask for?

Polar white, with 5-spoke forged wheels
Still struggling with a few little exterior trim bits, but mostly the car is "built"
