value decrease 997Gt3
Please answer honestly, and not all biased cause you own one:
With new GT3 about to be unvelied, will we see a value decrease of previous generation? Will soon be a good time to purchase a good 997 GT3 for a good price? |

Watching the prices on .2's over the last several months they are solid at $103 upwards to dealer asking prices $115K and above. If you want a manual you don't have that choice in the new one so prices will not move on the .2's IMO.

I have a deposit for 991 GT3, but was also on the look out for the right 997.2 GT3 for more than a year now. I found my car last week. During that time I have seen the prices edge up or at least stay steady and the supply dry up. Early, last year, PCNA website would have at least 25 .2 GT3s and 10 .2 RSes at any given time, now it is more like 10 .2 GT3s and couple of RSes if that. Of course, all this could change when the new GT3 starts shipping. But my thinking is either way, you will take a bigger depreciation hit with a brand new 991 GT3 than a used 997 GT3.

I expect that 997 GT3/RS cars will hold their value very well. I wouldn't expect to see a significant decrease in values any time soon, even when the 991 hits the US shores. 991's will be much more disposable and they will build as many as they can sell.
These cars will be keepers much like the 993's, last of the manuals/Mezgers with less electronics. |

If 991GT3 came with a manual transmission then 997 prices would really go down.
But that didnt happen. SO, the 997 being the last of the short wheel base, 6 speed manual, metzger wonder cars it is not surprising to see strong resale values and in some cases go up. They are drivers cars and simple to work with. Waiting for the right time to buy used has come and gone. Now you just have to jump in as prices are not going to dip drastically. Look at 993 C2S values. up to $75k for reasonable mileage examples that are already 15 years old! Up to $100k for 993 turbos! 997 GT3 for 60-70k looks pretty fair in comparison.... |

it's more than just linear demand/supply.
the price delta of 991 and 997 is getting bigger than 997.1 to 997.2 etc. the wealthy may play with newer machines. the next tier seeing the price delta may fetch older cars. then older cars price goes up. take a look in 6 gt prices. u want a car to thrash on track, a 50-60k 6gt3 or a 250k 4.0? |

If, a big if, 991RS does come out with a stick and/or gt3 adds the option, prices will drop. The new car may easily be $145-150k and up like mentioned above, but with a lot more options than old gen. New 991 3 equipped like old one is high $130s. |
I would agree that the true market is not at the dealer asking prices you see but some do sell. There was a white GT3 at Barrier with very low miles, PCCB's etc that likely sold above $117K. IIRC the asking price was $119K and was gone within 4 days.
I can't see a 991 RS being made with a manual when the car could shift quicker with the PDK and the model beneath it has that gearbox. The Mezger engine is also a big deal for many. I admit that I'm naive to the intricacies between the two but I gather that the Mezger's internals are stronger and is a more robust engine than what they're putting into the 991 GT3. |

Had a GT3, love the Mezger, however, do not kid yourself the Mezger had some problems, much less so in some ways with the .2s, maybe more in others. That said the 9A1 991 GT3 engine is arguably no less robust than the iconic Mezger and weighs ~50-60 lbs less, iircc. I believe this will be the basis for the race engine in years to come; others can elaborate ~ and will I'm confident. New engine shares close to nothing is common with the Carrera engine, unlike the turbo which is basically a boosted 9A1. New GT3 engine has Ti rods, forged pistions, 7 or 9 oil pick ups, true external dry sump, new valve train; ala 13+k revving crotch rockets, etc. Say what one will about PDK, a little more weight to the gt3, etc.. but I have no doubt I expect the new engine will be a marvel. Flame suit on, bring it!!!! |
