Default Stickiest dry weather 19" street tire

I would like to compile and update some of the great data about tires that I have read about on this forum.

I am currently looking for the stickiest street tire that I can find to use in the factory sizes. I drive my car a lot…20 autocrosses and 10 track days a year that I drive to, and 2-3 days a week of commuting to work. I am not looking to get a set of 18” track tires yet, so this post is strictly for recommendations and experience with stock sizes.

I am currently using the MPSS tires, and they are great for commuting but lack the overall grip that I am looking for on the track. They actually feel pretty slippery. I am not at all concerned with wet weather performance as I have a truck to drive in the rain.

Current frontrunners are the Hankook RS3 or the Toyo R888. I know that there are a lot of people on this forum that are unhappy with the R888, but remember that I am not looking for a racing slick. This needs to be a really sticky, dual-purpose, dry weather tire. These two choices just happen to be cheap also.

If anyone has experience with either tires, or have another suggestion please let me hear it. Additionally, if you have a comparison to the MPSS that would be even better. I would love to hear from people that have switched from MPSS to XXX and are so happy because they grip so much better on the track.

Thanks all!

I'm in the exact same boat as you. My Mpss is getting used nicely and toward its last breathe. I drove about 5k miles and 5 De events.

They get slipper and mushy like you said. Don't get me wrong, but Mpss is great value for their cost and its performance (probably 80% of the grip compared to other xxx gripper type) Plus it is all around purpose tires.

I'm not looking for dual purpose tires like you but wanting to try Rs3 ($1588)or R888 ($1424) or RE11 ($1218) or yoko AD08 ($1288). Prices are from tire track in Nb fitment 235/305 19s

Trofeo's wear very quickly and are very sensitive to pressure, right?

A little bit of wear resistence would be nice, but i understand how this affects grip.

Is it cheaper to pick up a set of OZ 18" wheels and run NT-01s than anything good in 19". All of the streetable 19" r-comps are 2x the cost of NT-01s, and ultimately, are inferior tires. I don't consider the R888 streetable due to extreme tire noise.

I am in the exact same dilemma as you, and decided on what I am suggesting to you.

^^tire noise? I guess owning a truck with 35's will you give you a whole new tolerance to tire noise. R888 will heat cycle out long before a full season if you drive with them the amount you do OP. probably the same for MPSC. Take a look at Bridgestone re11

All the below are better track tires than MPSS but not in the wet. These are street tires that work on the track and have good longevity. One Lap of America Tested

Bridgestone RE 11 old tire Works well but doesn't stand up to heat and gets greasy especially on heavier cars. The new RE 11A is coming out now in limited sizes but no test data available or 7.2GT3 sizes available yet.

Yokohama AD08 Works better than the RE 11 likes heat but does fall off some when hot. This is my preferred tire as it works better in colder weather and the wet than the Hankook RS-3. I usually get at least 8+ full track days out a set. The last 2/32 or so do fall off rapidly as it looks like the compound changes when you get that low.

Hankook RS-3 Best of the current street tires. Really like heat so makes a very good track tire. Do not like to be cold, i.e. slippery especially in AutoX environment on cold days. Not real rain friendly.

Bfg Rival is a New tire not yet available in 19's but should be coming in 2014. Preliminary tests indicate it works better than the current set oh High Performance street tires. Good cold grip for AutoX and likes heat so good track tire.

PS my avatar is on AD08 so they do have some grip.

Peter

Yeah, the NT-01's are just plain awesome, but I like to run with the traction control on, so I can't have the 315/30 on the rear.

This is exactly the same data that I have been coming up with. Many people around me are happily using the RS3's so it is kind of the frontrunner right now. I just wanted to see if there was anything better, but I think the answer to that question is the NT-01

It's good to hear that you have used them and feel that they are grippy. I don't care about the wet, and will learn to deal with the cold. NT-01's were actually fine in the wet (on a different car) but not in standing water. I suspect that the RS3's are similar.

Definitely interesting. For that price I would like some real world feedback first.

I know guys that run NT-01s with traction control and don't have issues. Sometimes user error is reported as equipment failure.

I will get you first hand experience soon.
