Does an ECU flash violate or void a CPO warranty?
I recently acquired a 997 GT2 from an out of state dealer. The car currently has 7,500 miles and came with a 2-yr, 100,000 mile CPO warranty. I am considering an ECU flash and BMC filter. I want to maintain the stock exhaust as the car will be my primary daily driver and my wife will occasionally be the passenger. I'm interested in an ECU flash, but don't want to jeopardize my CPO warranty. Other questions: 1) What ECU flash do you guys recommend? EVOMS, GIAC, Softronic, Switzer, others? 2) I understand the 997 GT2 clutch is already about at it's limit and an ECU flash can put it over the top and cause it to slip. What clutch upgrade is appropriate? |
If the dealer can see the flash, then it will void the warranty.
For the sake of the few HP that you might gain with a flash, I would say leave it alone. |
I changed the pressure plate, stock clutch no problems. Did the RS Tuning package.
Dealer will know if its flashed, if it breaks you will be stuck paying. |
The car already has a ton of HP, even for track use. The question you need to ask yourself is it worth voiding the warranty for power that you won't be able to use? Be realistic, do you even possess the skill to drive the car at its limit with stock HP?

flash will void warranty.
im not a fan of the flash. I have yet to see a flash you can actually feel in a GT3 other then dyno numbers. |
I love my flash, different car, instant power but not violent, I do love using it at the track:)

While you can flash back the stock file, the DME still records number of times the DME has been programed. IIRC, that cannot be changed so without documentation of a PCNA dealer having to reprgram your car to explain any value greater than 1, you are risking your warranty.

If you are going to chip the GT2, highly recommend upgrading the intercoolers
to the 997.2 TT intercoolers. Also modifying the exhaust to dissipate the extra heat. My 996 TT had the GIAC chip installed, no issues, tons of power. |
I was having a cold start Idle issue and it came down to a faulty ECU. My service adviser told me they we asked by Porsche to check the ECU if it was modified.
Since it wasn't flashed, they went ahead and paid for the diagnosis/labor (25 hours at $120/hour) and $2800 for the ECU. |
ran into this issue back in 2011 and I had the Porsche Zone rep at the dealer looking at my car and the Porsche rep asked if the ECU had been flashed. Lucky for me I had not done this so I was granted some engine warranty work. The Porsche rep ha the dealer look into my ECU on their computer and print out many pages. Porsche rep said and showed me how he can verify any ECU tamper and said Porsche will not give warranty if the ECU, intake, headers and cats plus other parts have been changed or tampered with. He said you can change mufflers after the cats no issue.
