New 997 GT2 - Questions

2 Attachment(s)
I'm new to the forum, and it's been quite a while since I've owned a Porsche. Last was a 930 in 1988. Well, I got the bug again and agreed to purchase what appears to be a nice 997 GT2. 5,000 miles, clean CarFax, "Not tracked", Black / Black. It is still inbound to the dealer I purchased it from (not a Porsche dealer). Upon arrival, it will receive a PPI from a local Porsche dealer. If it passes, it will then be shipped to me.

A few questions:

PPI:
I always like a leakdown test in a PPI, but I understand it's complicated on these cars and involves removing the rear bumper to get at the plugs. Is it common to do a leakdown test during a PPI on these cars?

I want to know over-revs, and PCCB wear, what else should I look for?

CPO:
While at the Porsche dealer for PPI, is it possible to have them CPO the car for me? What are the costs / benefits?

Wheels:
I wasn't crazy about the black centers on the wheels, but figured I would just have them recoated silver prior to delivery if it passes PPI. They are starting to grow on me though, I'll probably just leave them and see what I think in the flesh. Curious what you guys think, Black or Silver? (My car w/ black, another w/ silver)

I'll primarily use the car as a daily driver, but it'll undoubtedly end up on the track a few times. I'm really looking forward to it's arrival!

Check service records for consistent maintenance.

Trans fluid- is it fresh?

Alignment and ride height- is it factory or at least is it tracking straight?

5000 miles- tires new or need replacing?

LSD- check breakaway torque.

As for the wheels- just buy a set of new/used wheels you like, and put the stock wheels into storage for when you sell.

Plugs actually require dropping the turbos/manifolds a little to get to the coils for removal.

Hope it passes, and glad to see a new GT2 owner here!

I too am a big fan of the leak down test. I even have my own leak down gauge set and stethoscope.

But on a GT2 P-car with only 5000 miles there is no point. That lump is SOLID.

Now, if it had, say, 40,000 miles on it, then absolutely.

5000 miles is perfect.

Great choice, BTW.

go all black on the wheels

Congrats on the new beast.

At 5000 miles this baby is seriously barely run in.

Re the over revs, be careful with interpretation, these cars seem to read over revs more than other models quite often erroneously so do not be concerned with the range 1 to 4. A few range 5s (7800rpm) is OK but range 6s ie 8900rpm would indicate a mis shift.

Standard clutches are right on their limit and do not be surprised with a bit of slippage in 3rd gear upwards in colder weather where you will be getting lots of torque. There are simple Sachs upgrades to sort this.

Re the wheels, they both look great, it has to be your choice. The stock wheels are heavy (but strong) you can easily get rid of 10+kg unsprung weight with a quality wheel purchase - take a look at the OZ range they do two nice models which work well and are good value.

Gt2 script and wheels in orange like Johnny Bahamas avitars butt ;Op

I agree there is no need to get leak down check. Get CPO/warranty and move on. Very solid motors

Cheers

Beautiful car, congrats! I prefer silver wheels myself

I've seen 2 GT2's, both in as new condition, very low miles, and both same color! black at a dealership last year. Look at them side by side. Make no mistake! The glossy black wheels car cheap look to, for whatever reason ;)

In contrast, the other black with silver matt finish wheels, had classy, sport, luxurious look

Congrats ..in advance!

Hi TB993tt,

Thanks for the info. Now I have a question, I know a 997 GT2 that has 1x entry in range 6, 13 I think in 5 and some others in 4 etc. This happened 40,000km ago..the compression was measured and after 80,000km the car has had 4% and 3% compression loss. This is nothing..could maybe even happen with a new car. So the car got new official warranty.

I do however know, that other 997s - even the one with PDK (!)..sometimes have the same issue - the smililarty is always the same..the all have exactly 1 entry in range 6..what Im trying to say..this must be somehow a bug..because its not possible that every mishift will result exactly in 1 entry in 6..from different owners, around the world. That cars with PDK also have 1 entry in 6..this is theoretically not possible..

Porsche seems quite about these issues..but the cars are all still under official warranty..

range 5 and 6 are death to the warranty on GT3. I have no idea how Porsche handles range 5 adn 6 on the GT2 though.

It is definately a bug or something erroneous, I have lots of data logs on Durametric with all sorts of high rev readings when changing gear near the limit and I know for a fact I never miss shifted. It is not a Durametric fault as when I sent my ECU back to RS a while back they said I had many over revs and had I been miss shifting this was using their factory interagation equipment. Only I have driven my car from new and I have never miss shifted.

TB993tt 02-11-2013 01:48 PM

Like I said these occur at most gear changes, here is one and it is easy to see from the other data that the over rev reading is not real.

Here is a really stupid one
