The problems with getting CAN data through the obd2 port is that:
1) data output might not be as fast
2) data channels more limited (we can't get steering angle through obd2 port)

1) This is true. CAN data through OBD2 on pre-997.2 GT3 is not fast. 997.2 GT3 is fast CAN through the OBD2 port however, or fast enough at least.
2) Also true. But if you ever do need more data, it's not difficult to tap into fast CAN elsewhere with more data, or add more specific sensors. Good thing about AIM is its ease of expandability via ports and sensors. You can take a simple system for a street car that you occasionally take to HPDEs then later expand the same system to a race car with sensors and data up the wazoo

I use an AIM EVO4 over the CAN bus and love it. Best driving investment so far and compliments working with a pro driver very well. It's pretty amazing seeing where they make up (and sometimes) lose time vs. you.
