Default Hoosier R6: Drive to Track?

Did some research already but would like some opinions. I have a .2 GT3 with a set of street and track wheels. I've been running MPSC's for the track and RE-11's on the street. I chatted with a fellow Rennlister at the track this weekend and found out how much cheaper the Hoosier R6 is than the MPSC and was pretty shocked. He mentioned that some do drive them to the track but that it does add unwanted heat cycles as well as has no rain grooves. I live 1hr from WSIR and AAA; 1.2 from Buttonwillow so that is the longest I would ever drive on them (assuming clear conditions). Any experience here from other owners who have driven to the track on R6's? Or am I just crazy to even consider it?

Thanks

You would be replacing them so much faster then your mpsc since the added heat cycles driving to and from and they dont last as long as the mpsc so in the end I think you'd be spending more on the Hoosiers

R6 don't last long and that's track only. It's cheaper to run Mpsc if u drive to/fro track. Kuhmos v710's is another alternative to r6 and lasts longer- I driven those to/fro to track- way grippier then Mpsc's and slightly(very) notch below r6's. But don't drive either one on rain unless u like to work on car control skills. Mike

DON'T DO IT.

R6's are VERY thin tires. A small nail that will do nothing to an MPSC or RA1 or R888 will end your day with an R6.

+1000. The steel belts are very light.

When "Hoosier_Daddy" tells you not to, you listen!

Thanks for the opinions guys. Kinda what I thought but figured it was worth asking. Now if we could just get Nitto to make the NT-01 in our sizes.... Dare to dream.

If you fancy forfeit, and don't mind the visual spectrum of a homeward cloud puff refracted to the hue of a mild but persistent psychosis, dry-track tires & rain on public roads will deliver.

Try RA1's. Same compound, different tread pattern.

For sure. A sharp stone can take out an R6. Not worth it.

I drive about 50 miles to the track on R6s and so far have had no issues. I have run them through light rain, but not a heavy downpour. I went through 3 sets of R6s last year and personally don't notice that they wear any faster than MPSC. They are definitely cheaper and better for the track. I have lost 2 MPSC to road debris - I think both tires are susceptible to damage in this regard. Very convenient to drive the GT3 to the track. Also, two of my track friends also drive to the track on R6s (GT3 and 360 Stradale)..

I would be way more concerned about a flat than rain, esp here in socal. I did two or three track days on mpsc then switched to r6. Mpscs at that point probably had one or two mare days. With r6, figure roughly 3 days if towing to track. So far mine have all died from heat cycling not cording.

Are people "curing" their tires as recommended by Hoosier? They recommend heating them with graded laps over about 15 minutes, starting at 50% and ending with your fastest lap. Then, you let them rest for at least a full 24h or even better a week. They claim this will increase the life of the tire. Do any of you do this, and if so, have you noticed a difference in # of track days you get per tire?

I would also like to hear what people have to say about this. Not an easy thing to do, though, even with two sets of wheels.

I would also like to know if people are getting their R6s "heat cycled" from tire rack, and if there is a noticeable difference compared to those not heat cycled. I did this on the last set I ordered, and now have about 10 heat cycles on them. During my last session I still had good grip, and I am curious to see if they last significantly longer.

I find the money "saved" on R6 is not true. They are the best track tire in my opinion, but they do not last very long. They always heat cycle out before cording. MPSC will last longer than R6 and are safer to drive to and from the track. If you divide the price by number of track days, the MPSC is a little better of a buy. Performance though is better with Hoosier.
