I'm just trying to figure out who the go-to top shelf USA p-car vendors are now that I'm in the GT3 addict group. Based on my limited knowledge and research, I'm not convinced at some of the engine work being done by the players today - not that for my novice needs I need a Manthey - but it's good to know what quality level you're working with because $ is $.
For example, who uses Mahle pistons on their engine work? What concessions are being made for that package price? What's their R&D? The track or some dyno garage in an industrial complex next to some suburb? If the track, then what makes it materially better than strip mall dyno work? I'm less interested on the marketing hype and more so on verifiable results along both the gains, durability, and exclusivity fronts. Not trying to stir the pot - just genuinely interested to get some thoughts from fellow forum members. Danke. |
run of the mill pre-owned 997 GT3 or (pre-owned Cayman and newish 997 Carrera).

I'll pm ya! |
There are a handful of good engine builders in California. A lot of them aren't active online. 4.0 GT3 engines have been built and tracked for several years, and many don't even know it. In fact, the guy responsible for developing the 4.0 kit with Mahle/Perfect Bore (now Capricorn) doesn't even have a website!
In my opinion, the 105.4mm Mahle forged pistons and rings is the best way to get a 4.0 engine. You'll find Mahle pistons in every Porsche factory engine. These pistons also allow you to keep the original engine stroke and still get 4 liters. The downside of increasing stroke is that you increase the side loading on your liners and also increase the acceleration rates of your pistons (more stress). Obviously the longer stroke works and it's proven in Porsche factory RSRs, but those engines have short service lives before they are rebuilt. There are a number of outfits in California that can build these 4.0 mahle engines. I chose to go with IPB-Autosport for mine. The owner Ron Kain has been building 911 race engines for 25 years. |

Tough for anyone to match Manthey's record of five wins in the last six Nurburgring 24 Hours.
Olaf and team know what they're doing. |
