Anyone here had this kind of oil leak?
997.2 GT3, owned from new since april 2010, 45000kms on the clock.
First I saw: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-k...0/IMG_2721.jpg (after a trackday). And then we saw: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-d...0/IMG_2722.jpg https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-w...0/IMG_2724.jpg No errors, no oil pressure errors. Oil level still ok. I have an appointment the 26th to have it checked out. Now a friend of mine said it could be coming from the gear box? If this is the case how can I be sure there still is enough oil in it? Are there any sensors there too that would trigger a warning on the dash? The car feels perfectly normal while driving (otherwise I would have noticed it I guess) and I am supposed to drive it to the dealer. |
RMS is my guess

Does an RMS leak that much, and only on one side?
|
Seems more then RMS...
45K Km's... You know you are only supposed to bubble wrap and wax these cars right? |

I can't remember if there was more oil on one side of my rear bumper than the other - it was totally covered - a few cars behind me got a little shower as well. I'm assuming if you are going in circle on a track, the oil would likely deposit itself more on one half of the bumper. |
The bumper had the same amount of oil on both sides. It is only on the underside of the car that the oil only is on the left hand side.

It looks like from the pic it might be further up from the transmission. Maybe the tranny cooler. TRansmission oil has a pretty distinct smell though. Should be easy to determine if its gear or engine oil. There is no low level warning light/sensor for the gear oil. Not sure I would drive it to the dealer if it is from the tranny. That looks like it may have lost a decent amount.

Maybe I should try tasting it and comparing the taste to the bottle of engine oil I still have left here :D

+1 And if it's an RMS it will be the first one for a 7.2 GT3. Good luck with the warranty and keep us posted. |
You own a true Porsche!

Did this put an end to your RMS issues?

You need to really smell it to determine if it's tranny or engine oil. The former has a distinct, aromatic smell while the latter just smells like, well, stinky engine oil. I wouldn't drive the car AT ALL if it's tranny.
You've lost a decent amount there and you'd be surprised that our trannies can run for a LONG time even when completely dry. Ask me how I know... I have the $25k repair bill to back my experience. Don't repeat my mistake!! From experience, our GT cars need a tranny warning light. Fiats and Lambos all do. That would go a long way towards nipping tranny damages in the bud... |
A quick update on this one.
Seems I am the first here to suffer an RMS leak on an mk2 engine. :surr: |
