Default Question for Center Lock owners (center locking pin)

I'm trying to determine the correct position of the locking pin, when engaged.

In the 1st photo, the center pin is "popped out" and is nearly flush with the outer splines.

In the 2nd photo, the center locking pin is slightly depressed and not quite flush with the outer surface of the splines (apologies for the iPhone pictures).

Is the correct position for a fully engaged locking pin as shown in photo #1?

Also, in the last photo there appears to be a space for a missing tool directly above the lug bolt guides (why are these included in cars with centerlocks anyway?) and to the left of the rectangular box which holds the wrench/screwdriver. Does your toolkit include a tool in this space?

Thanks in advance!

Picture #1 shows correct engagement. In picture #2, the locking pin is not correctly engaged with the splines and the centerlock bolt could become loose.

It seems Porsche puts a standard tool kit in all 997's, the lug bolt guides are also included with my toolkit, a 2011 GT3.

That missing "opening" in your toolkit is a carryover from the 5-bolt days. Used to hold the key to the wheel locks.

With all this CL nonsense you'd wish you had that bit filled and the 5 bolts back!

Agree with above. BTW, you need to get your car in for the center lock recall

5 lugs were so stress free.

Thanks everyone for the replies/help.

The RS3.8 is not mine; I was helping out a friend who was over for the weekend. I had mentioned to him the center lock recall and revised mounting/installation procedure. We wanted to make absolutely sure the center locking pin was indeed correctly engaged.

If the locking pin is not flush how does one make it flush with the nut? Pull with a hook of some sort?

Apparently the owner's manual mentions inserting a 1/2 inch diameter adapter to then wiggle the nut left/right to make it "pop" out. I subsequently wondered if this was missing from the toolkit. Ironic that the factory supplies you with tools you don't need (lug bolt guide pins) and omits the one you do (the aforementioned 1/2 inch adapter).

I wonder what the purpose is for the central locking pin to be depressed 1/2 way? It seems deliberate, and yet, the pin isn't fully engaged in this position.

I use my old 1/2" breaker bar. It used to be my primary tool to break the lugs on my C2S; see, you can recycle your old technology!!
