Get a Boxster Spyder! I have one (also have a 997.1 GT3RS and a 993) and the Spyder just rocks. It is so balanced, sweet and fun -- the suspension is absolutely perfect, the proportions are just right, and there is enough power for the street. I use my Spyder as my daily driver (13.5k miles now) and the "tent" works just fine (completely dry even in the hardest of rains) and the gas mileage is pretty decent. After over one year of ownership the Spyder still continues to thrill -- it just might be the best car I have ever owned. Porsche nailed it with this car. Plus, you can even use it on the track, where it punches way above its weight:

Re the Spyder, be sure to check out Pete's excellent article in the latest issue of Excellence (comparing the GT2RS and the GT3RS) . . . .

I would highly recommend the Lotus Evora S
Great daily driver- Best factory suspension ever!
Uber fast precise steering rack -458ish
Superb HANDLING!- Incredible chassis!
Extremely fun to drive!!
Make sure you take a test drive!!!
Interior is not the best but pretty good in Lotus standards
This my gt3 next to the Lotus...
What I liked the most was the position of the shifter. High and close to the steering wheel.. Old School race stuff, fabulous
I will take the Evora S over Cayman S or R any given day no questions.... If you want the best mid engine car for the given price this is it! oh yeah Honda NSX-R is great too!

But no matter what you need to keep a Mezger Porsche in your garage!

The Evora doesn't make sense -- heavy and expensive with a generic (Toyota?) engine instead of the signature Lotus name. Also rare to see more than one at the track. The "race" version looked very well sorted out but I imagine it's hard to resell the thing when you come to your senses and know you want to be driving a 911.

If you didn't want the bikini top, you're describing the Boxster Black Edition (same horses, same 0-60 time.)
I dare say the Spyder wins on fun, feel and resale value, but the Black Edition is rather more versatile and practical as an all-rounder. Just get a hefty discount up front to defray the loss on resale. I don't know that the next Boxster is coming too soon or arriving as anything but incremental. Not sign of a hard top cabrio in 99x or 98x, sadly. Maybe Porsche will hold to the threat of the Panamera being the hard top cabrio 2+2 GT for Porsche in the future (with a $200K price tag ...) The skyrocketing prices of Porsches could bring excellent resale value on some of the 997's and things like the Spyder.

You gotta have the small windshield frame and bikini top

Curb weight 3164lbs:

And 0-60 4.9 sec ... nothing to rave about.
Compare that to a Boxster S Black Edition around the US$65K mark or Spyder starting at $61K.
The blown Evora S at close to $80K could be fun, and about the same 3166lb, but hell, you're well into 911 territory and only the UK reviews suggest Lotus is superior to the Porsche. That's less HP (something like 345hp) and perhaps 200lbs heavier than a 997.1 GT3 and forced induction ... not exactly what I'd call a compelling new car ...

Thank you all! I think my heart is set on the Boxter Spyder.... here's how I'd like it:
1.) White on Black w/Black Wheels
2.) Sport Bucket (GT2) seats w/Alcantara Interior Package)
3.) Sport Exhaust
4.) Sport Shifter
5.) Sport Chrono... need that sport button.
6.) Normal Steel Brakes
7.) Bi-xenon w/LW Battery
5.) PCM w/Sound Package Plus and Bluetooth.
I see 2012 models in the inventory lists of a lot of dealers. Did they increase the production #'s due to strong sales? Is it possible to order one? or too late?

id just pick up a used example to bomb around.
PCCB to keep storage rust away would be nice...
standard seats for easy entry/exit would be ok too...
Do you really have to get sport chrono option in order to get sport button or can it be had without?
I want a boxster spyder now too!

Sport button is simply a more aggressive ECU tune to liven up the engine (more responsive, more power in mid-range, etc.). PASM is a stability control and a separate button.

You're describing Savy's car (which he's dumb enough to sell) but I'm pretty sure he has PDK in it (which I think is the ideal for an all-rounder and a lot of fun on the track with "sport plus" shifts.)
