FSR VIR 5/2011 Video "playing tag w/ rmag"

Had a super good time again chasing rmag around the vir f course last weekend.

This was the 1st session Sunday and after just 2 days (friday and saturday) our tires were smoked but I still squeezed out a 2.07 (beginning at the 2.42 mark). Hot weekend and the track seemed a bit slow to everyone so clearly no lap times to write home about but I had a silly good time hanging w/ my track mates.

See vid :burnout: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFenaIYdAsA

Love it

2:08 is nice

Thanks man :)

We were struggling the entire weekend. I shot video almost every session and I doubt there's one corner I could hold onto it. It was hot and slippery :crying:

Excuse the editing I'm still worn out :)

excellent work behind the wheel, really a joy to watch, the guy in front had a great line as well, just had a bit more power through the straights.... guess its time to upgrade to the .2 ;)

When Peter Erik and I were there a few months ago my best was 2:10, first time there. I left tons of ime on the table, but the fast corners had Porsche Tombstones in them and I did not want to add one :)

Peter and Erik were in the 2:08 range

We were running Toyo RA1's

TRAKCAR 05-23-2011 06:10 PM

hey, hey, I did a 2:077. Just sayin'..

Bman 05-23-2011 06:25 PM

What? No Sabbath sound track?

Fritz, thanks for the vid. It was good to see you! Too bad I lost my radiator after only 5 laps the first day......I would have enjoyed running with you guys. Hmmm.....the last time I was chasing Ryan he kept throwing rocks & dirt at me too! :p

Luckily my wife brought her Cayman and I was able to share the car with her. I really had a lot of fun running it! It sure was slippery but that only added to the fun for me!

Thanks!

All the GT cars are super but that .2 is truly a beast and it's no doubt a tuff animal to wrestle but I'll just have to figure out how to use the go pedal a little more, start cutting holes in the metal (not much more can be taken out of the car lol), buy susp parts, etc....etc.... OR just bring the FD (3rd gen rx7) to the track the next time rmag is there :D. The two RX7s I pass in the vid are my fellow track rats and they were running some good laps at 2.11. The yellow car knocked out a 2.07 at the last TT we attended 10/10 which tells you how slow the track was.

As you know VIR is a really technical track so those are some awesome times especially your 1st time and on RA1s to boot. I was on new rear R6s and 3 day Front HOOS. I basically can only get 2 good days out of the rears and about 4 out of the fronts. This car eats tires but it's so much fun to drive I can't complain.

Great time on the RA1s. I think it will be tuff to chisel it down further w/o running better tires.

At the zone 2 event which was much better weather rmag had a 2.04 and I ran a 2.05. I think he's pushing a bit harder into 3 and up the esses and through 17 now so if the weather is good he could see a 2.03 or even lower later this year.

Good to see you again and nice meeting your wife.

OUTSTANDING job in the Cayman you had lots of people talking about that car :D

Ryan is a piece of work. Tosses rocks at me any chance he can and when I take a picture of him and his beautiful rig he flips me off in the photo, JUST WOW! hehe :D

PS I have lots of video from this event so don't worry I'll crank the tunes in the next one.

jenk12m 05-23-2011 06:58 PM

Thanks for the video, you need to make Ryan wash your car for all that dirt he likes to throw on you. Haha

That's a good point. He followed me quite a bit and not once did I shower his RS with any of Alton's dirt.

rmag 05-23-2011 07:13 PM

Awesome time doing lead follow Fritz! Thanks for the tip in the esses! Weekend was great, but too hot. Got up to 92, so track was real slippery. best I could muster was a 2:05.
Here's a vid of fritz and his ass hanging out everywhere. Was last session on sat, so super slick. Lots of hand work just to keep the car on track as 4 wheel drifting in most corners. Fritz finally found a way to hold me back... (see 3o second mark). He starts to lose it going into the snake, makes me go straight and brake, so if he didnt save it, i could have just driven off and missed him.

http://www.vimeo.com/24137708

Also met Bob (RWK), and his '07RS build is a friggin' beast. 2850lb wet, carbon this/that, 405hp at the wheel, full suspension, race motons, blah, blah, blah. Oh and his 996 RSR build wasn't to shabby either.

I ran a 2:08 first session out. Corded rears the first session, went to unshaved and times dropped to 2:12, after 650! track miles I finally got the times down to 2:08 again and finally broke 2:08, mostly because the tires finally wore down to give some grip, but I drove much better then first session!

I've been watching your video's. you guys are FAST
2:03/4/5 wow.. I think I might be able to do 2:05 on Hoosier, if the it's cold and the stars allign just right, but I don't know where I'd find another 2 seconds..

just like all tracks

you dont find time on the straights.....just in the dangerous corners

Izzone 05-23-2011 07:44 PM

Do wither of you guys have video with data overlay.....brake and gas

I went to a track talk form David Murray and he pointe dout stuff at VIR I would never think of, but I want to see if you do it

TRAKCAR 05-23-2011 07:45 PM

Ryan, nice driving, very cool.

I think I ape your line pretty good, but I have nothing for you in 3 and 4.
I am very spars with my steering inputs, you... let's say not so much LOL!! Awesome.

The last turn, before the front straight you have an ability there to carry speed but make the track shorter  Too bad no data and sound.

RWK 05-23-2011 09:20 PM

THANK YOU!!!

Ryan / Fritz

Thank you so much for an absolutely awesome weekend. The tips were invaluable!!!!!!!!!!! The light came on in the last few sessions!!

We got consistent 2:09's with a few drops into the 2:08's, runnning together, but only because of the assistance from you 2 gentlemen. A little better on Sat.

You are welcome at my home any time that you decide to do a trip up north.

Just dropped the cars off at the builder to get the vibration out, then off to Canada.
Best
Bob

Really nice video as always! Sorry to hold you up Fritz, I should of given you the point and let you pass in south bend. I enjoyed watching you and Ryan push each other all weekend. Looking forward to you getting that passenger seat in for next time :D

Nice meeting some new people and seeing some familiar faces as well. I was the guy with the yellow RX-7. I'm sad to say all my video from this weekend was out of focus. I'm guessing I had something on my lexan window on my bulkhead separating the driver's compartment from the hatch.

If I make it up North you've got to take me for a ride in that beast. Wish I had a chance to take you up on your offer to drive it at VIR, just to busy with student and taking people out for ride alongs (enjoyed ours...to bad it was so slick when I took Russ out, not as much fun)

The .2 has a 2.02 in it with safe driving so you'll easily hit the 2.03 mark you just need seat time at VIR. I have some data if I can figure out how to upload it. The places to get time are between 2 and 3, up the esses, into oak tree and into/through/out of 16/17. I think Ryan is into 3 at 97 and I'm over 100 (possibly 107) but my data man had 3 four locos on top of a few beers to wash down the BQ to that night when he was talking about my #s LOL. Those are the few places at VIR that most of us track junkies are not FLAT OUT hehe.

BOB,
You're enthusiasm and LIGHT are just way too cool. I wish we could of hung out some more and like Ryan said I also wish I would of taken you up on the drive offer. Both of those cars are dream track weapons. Have fun in Canada and keep on rocking

Driving on the hot track with good tires let me shake it out pretty good and I'm really close to FD comfortable but not quite yet. Probably need another 6 months behind the wheel but like the FD these cars are SUPER FUN to drive so I'm having a ball.

2.02!!?? Not with RA1's and not with me driving LOL.
I miss VIR already, my favorite track!

Please critique before and after:
My best lap: 2.063 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=goB2-lpQ88g
This was with too much LSD last year, nice and cool and good grip.

This year, warmer, less grip, did not have the rear tires, but I improved my driving; Kept it much tighter in T1, lap 2 above is horrible!
T3 faster, I hit 96, but I do go over slow here! Just such a wishy washy corner, can't rotate car too much with braking, cant plant the car properly on throttle.
Oaktree now in 3rd, but slower through ss-es:
More then a second slower, but I think better driving?! or not?

I agree not on RA1s but absolutely on Hoosiers here's some food for thought.

Keeping it tight into 1 is a good move but if the car is pushing you're screwed there. This time out I had on 3 day old hoos front and new hoos rear so I was working hard to get it turned and consequently was usually out wide having to drive back across the track to set up for 3 which of course isn't ideal.

You can go into t3 at 105 or higher

You should be at 130 (cool day) top of esses w/o even tracking too far left

A buddy of mine (paddy) on the forum is entering oak tree at 87  Ryan was using 3rd gear but I think he's now decided 2nd is slower mid corner but gives him more exit speed overall. In the .1 I'm absolutely in 2nd ( my speeds don't drop below 50 but I'm entering too slow ). There are 2 approaches; out wide off the apex which results in less speed entering but more speed exiting and in tight literally hopping the curb with a very straight line approach (Paddy's approach) but it calls for a big slide approx 45% angle and dropping down to 42 to 47 mph and is much more dangerous and harder to nail consistently so you gain a ton of time or lose a ton.

I haven't checked any data going into t16/t17 but I suspect I'm going in faster and exiting faster than Ryan w/ less power and tire so AGAIN the .2 has some time there for sure. I also get completely crushed out of oak tree, out of one, out of the little esses and down the straights. With that said I think my car is down on power. It has that revo tuning thing set for 91 w/ some timing pulled out so if anyone has some info about switching it back to 93 and moving the timing up some I'd appreciate it. I need all the help I can get :D

I agree with the rest. My car did not push because front tires were better then rear tires.

I hope that didn't come across wrong. Great driving. I'm jealous. I say this only because I had the same problem for awhile until I adjusted sways and different compression settings.

Fritz, that's a monster number at the TOP of the esses. You know of any vids with data overlay on this? Do you have to use the short cut over the curbing/grass/dirt on the first right hander (hump) at the bottom the esses to ring out such a number?

I had data but just erased everything including all the settings etc.... trying to figure out how to connect the frikken thing to the software on my computer. I hate this kind of thing. Anyone want to buy a traqmate?

When Brent uploaded it the data was all kinds of crazy because the antennae was flying all around the car so I'm sure my #s are not accurate. I'm probably going about 115 at the top of the esses and 90 into t3 ;)

TRAKCAR 05-24-2011 02:00 PM

Do what Mooty did, drive over Traqmate and you'll feel good once about Traqmate..

ukrbmw 05-24-2011 11:20 PM

This was a fun weekend - I was there in #16 6GT3. Track was slippery, haven't gone through all my data, but it looks like 2:05 might have been it for me.

You guys must be doing something different if you're entering T3 at 105 and Oak Tree at 87. My 2:05 lap had me at 70 through T3 and around 45 in Oak Tree (these are lowest speeds through the corner - this is per data, speedometer is not very accurate).

Lets clean out RA1 then do all the tracks again on R6 or go straight for the Yokohama slicks..

Perfect, but I'll try eagle rs Goodyear first. We still have Canada and California to hit

Then Erik still has ra1 to use up, too cheap to buy new tires....we make his life miserable with him on ra1 and us on slicks

Fritz has been talking max speed before braking into the turns, not corner entry speed (although he never made it clear in his posts). 87/105 entries would be nice! Your #'s are similar for min corner speed.

BTW, 2:05 is moving for a 6gt3. Any mods or close to stock?

You guys must be doing something different if you're entering T3 at 105 and Oak Tree at 87. My 2:05 lap had me at 70 through T3 and around 45 in Oak Tree (these are lowest speeds through the corner - this is per data, speedometer is not very accurate).

I remember your car from Friday, passed me and I figured I'd catch up but NOPE :surr:

Great driving and really nice car

I don't have track data but I do try to use the go pedal to it's max or what my stomach can tolerate and then look at the MPH gauge just before braking. Top of the esses I would see 127 to 130 the 1st couple of laps before the tires would get hot if the track was clear. I'm hoping to get this traqmate thing sorted out as one more tool to help me push harder and keep Ramon from doubting me :)

My main goal that weekend was trying to stay flat out into 3, I didn't make it, but a couple of times I almost did and saw 105 just before braking.

Some friends helped set up the traqmate for me Saturday but the little magnetic antennae thingy was on the roll bar and it was moving around so the data was off. However the MPH data looked like it was accurate when following the little dot around the track and we saw 107 into 3.

The 87 MPH into t11 is from my buddy Pats data (paddy on this forum) and I couldn't believe it either but it's there. He takes a very direct entry (straight line in) brakes very hard and rotates. It's actually the line I used to run years ago and taught him to do but I have since pulled off of the apex a bit/or turn later to give myself a better angle because as mentioned it's a hard slide to nail over and over again but when you do it right it does feel AWESOME. My data showed speeds no lower than 50 or 52 and I'm betting Pats speeds are a little lower so what you gain going in will hurt the exit speed so segment analysis could be the best way to determine what approach is best/fastest however for consistency and safety I'll likely stick with the later entry.

BTW, 2:05 is moving for a 6gt3. Any mods or close to stock?

Yep.

His car is slightly modded hehe ;)

Just a natural skeptic. And, of course, I like busting your chops. However, if the vid was of you in the RX7 then there would be no doubt :D But seriously all the vids w/data of 2:04s - 2:06s I've seen have GT3s ranging from 116-124 at the top of the esses. But I now am a believer as I came across a vid of J. Sofronas in a race prepped BMW (E36--3L ??--probably have this all wrong) holding 124 mph from the bottom to the top of the esses. So I would think that 130s are possible in a GT3RS.

I may actually be a lot lower because GPS is 99.9% accurate and usually much lower than the speedo.

Hopefully I'll get the RS back out on the full course, get this traqmate sorted out and have some data for you.

Now I need to sort out this tuning thing to try to keep Ryan in sight.

Who has a revo chip/tune thing and how easy is it to switch to 93 octane and up the timing?

That makes sense - I was starting to think I wasn't trying hard enough.

Car is running monoball suspension and motons, almost stock power though. I'm just getting used to it still and trying to learn best way to trailbrake, but still get amazed at this car every time I drive it

Here's a Covette doing sub 2 min and over 130mph at the top. Impressive how he enters the upper esses at 127, I can do that, but than accelerates to 140 in the middle

Note the the 59mph speed in T3. Well below ukrbmw's 70mph

To carry max speed into 3 you drive a pretty straight line which hurts the angle a bit but it's often said that road racing is a drag race between corners and if you get those speeds maxed before braking that's usually the quickest way around. Sometimes in order to stay on the gas longer the next corner is sacrificed a bit which is the case w/ t3. Staying on throttle often causes a straight line approach making the next turn sharper and slows the mid corner speed quite bit as you slide the car to get it pointed which is why his t3 speed is so low but note the 103 max speed before t3 which is good.

BTW I love that vid. Wally really has that car dialed in and does a great job behind the wheel.

ukrbmw 05-25-2011 11:43 AM

Yep, all the Fritz said and I may have exaggerated a little!

Good driving, guys!

That was me in the white rolling road block (997TT). You guys were flying, and I couldn't get my arm out fast enough. :roflmao:

First time I've had the turbo out there on 4 year old PS2s and no LSD. I was having fun in my 'own zone'. :)

My 6-3 is still in the shop. :(

I darn near had a heat stroke on Sun!

Paddy 05-25-2011 04:43 PM

Nice, catching up with you fellas this weekend. The best lap I could muster was a 2:11.6 Saturday morning chasing Fritz and Ryan. I seriously need a LSD in my car and I think it's time to remove some weight. Actually, another 100hp would be nice too :)

I'll get my Traqmate data out tonight and tell you my exit speed out of Oak Tree. I think it's ~ 46mph

Fritz Flynn 05-26-2011 08:30 PM

Here's another vid.

This is from the Saturday afternoon session that Ryan posted w/ the temp at 90 but we had ball which was a great way to finish off the day.

Cranking some D JR so turn it up

I'm a little disappointed I only blasted you with dirt once coming out of Oak tree:D That was pretty cool to see same laps from both perspectives (both inside, and in front/behind)

Bman 05-26-2011 10:00 PM

Much better!

Indeed, see you in the fall for some low lap times  F#ck data just don't lift and brake late, correction, don't lift but brake early because Porsche can't make an ABS system that works at the track ;)

i like this combo, too.

I'm still debating the best 997 color but there's no denying the 7 RS has some gorgeous hips.

ukrbmw 05-30-2011 09:51 PM

Finally, pulled my video but need to start an account somewhere so I can upload it.

I do love that gray car. New RS cars are very pretty, I'll just have to keep working with the poor man's version!

Too bad we were so spread out in the paddock, otherwise would've certainly walked over and say hello.
