997.2 Center Console Removal DIY

10 Attachment(s)
Let's take out the center console! After all, there are some cool hardwire projects that have cable harnesses that will need to be routed thru this entire area.

My car is somewhat unique in that I have the iPod connection in the storage console. You'll most likely want to take at least one of the seats out. Read my seat removal DIY first:

https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-...moval-diy.html

O.K., the seat is out, so let's begin in earnest on the console.

Tools You'll Need:

small plastic spudger (non-marring wedge tool)
T20 Torx screw driver
T30 Torx screw driver
small screwdriver
furniture pad and/or towels (to protect car)

I'll start in the passenger footwell. You can start on either side - it doesn't matter as identical, except for the 12v convenience outlet on the passenger side.

Let's continue getting that console out!

Prior to actually removing the console, you need to disconnect the main cable harness for the console. This connection is behind the cubby, just forward of the shift lever. You need to twist (rotate) the mated connectors in order to release them from the chassis. Then you can un-mate them before you remove the entire console from the car. Sorry I didn't manage to get a decent photo of this step!

Excellent GT3 center console removal pictorial!

I would add that after you rotate the black shift collar 90 degrees (CCW to loosen), be careful when pulling shift knob off the shaft not to punch yourself in the face when it finally lets loose. I avoided the self-abuse but best to go slow.

Waaauw that looks difficult without proper instructions!

Mine is identical to yours. I don't have an I pod, but do have the connection :-)
Good post to look up if I ever want to paint my console  thank you..

Will this work for a 997.1 also or is it a lot different?
Thanks, great pics

Glad you brought this to the top... Reminds me I have to source a 'used' center console to replace the cracked CF console that came w/ my car. (also a 997.1GT3)

I've done this both on a 997-1 and a 997-2. It's actually a little easier on a 997-1 since you don't have to deal with the iPod/Aux/USB connectors in the back of the console. Otherwise it's the same thing.

Thank You Ilko. I'm on it

thanks for the great instructions, I did this yesterday. Definitely took some time. I did end up snapping the top clips of the side panels on each side, but seems to hold just fine. Interior pry bars are a must!

Just wanted to say many thanks for this - printed it all our and had the thing out a lot faster than I expected. A superb guide.

On a 997.1, at least, I don't think there's any need to get the seat out. Oh, and there are two more screws right at the very front of the panel that aren't mentioned in the diagrams, but it's pretty obvious when you try to lift the panel out as it'll still be hinged at the end. :)

This is awesome. It is perfect for my '09 GT2 997.1 with the .2 console.
