I had to Google it, but you're right in terms of what Maranello planned.
I'm thinking only in terms of design then and now, not specific model lineage. Still, every time I see a 612, I think "wow, look at that 456 ... they were sensational" ... then get closer and I realize it's a car that's a decade younger and 3x the price and I remember I'd never be happy with the driving of a 456, but the 575 "hot rod" version GTC could be a lot of fun, if only I could stomach the booty call from the service department.
All that said, having just had a track day with another driver in a 599, I think that's the one for my retirement years. Of course, they'll soon have something with the dual-clutch transaxle and that will set the new high water mark and the 599's will be worth nothing on resale. As ever.
