What about the availability of a 09 GT3... I'm in the "won't be one until 998" camp...

+1... unless Porsche gets greedy and will roll out more 08 GT3/RS... so... I did put my name on the waiting list just in case.... for the RS that is... wishful thinking... but for now I will enjoy my regular 3

Considering how well the 997 GT3 and RS is selling, I can't imagine why Porsche would not make a DFI MkII version before the 998. A DFI, 3.8L powerkit Carrera S will make as much power as the current GT3, with a lot more torque. I don't think Porsche will wait till the 998 to deliver a DFI GT3.

I'm with SpeedGeek. Not only is the GT3/GT3RS a proven moneymaker in terms of sales, but as a homologation car of sorts it is also a halo vehicle for the entire 911 line. Plus, there were two versions of the 996GT3, the latter of which overlapped with the introduction of the 997. I foresee history repeating itself. Unless the economy completely collapses, I don't see any reason why it wouldn't. A 998GT3 wouldn't be introduced until after the base, S, cabrios, etc., which would mean 2012 or 2013 at the earliest. That wouldn't make any business sense...I'm quite sure we'll see a 2010-2011 997GT3 with either a 3.8, direct injection, or both...along with DSG/PDK.

I think Speed geek is right too. A 3.8 DFI MKII GT3 will come out before the 998 does.

You guys make a good case for a 2010-2011 3.8 DFI 997GT3...

Given this potential scenario, do you guys think the 2007-2008 GT3s will be more collectible as they wiil be the last of the of the non-DFI , 3.6 version...

logic seldom makes much headway with PAG

and believe me, you really do not want a double clutch arrangement...... one of the world's great stupid ideas. The seamless shifting gearboxes used in F1 are a development of what is being readied for road cars, where the technology originated.

Have you weighed this stupid double clutch arrangement, counted the increased moving parts.............

F1 boxes are true sequential racing boxes that are robotically power shifted, so almost no delay. I can't imagine such a gearbox would work in a road car. The noise alone would be ridiculous.

Ferrari is talking about using a small electric motor in their road cars to momentarily power the car for the few tens of milliseconds it takes to shift their paddle gearboxes. This would make an up-shift feel seamless even though it took say 50 ms or so.

I do agree with you that twin clutch systems are heavy, but they do work well. And like it or not, PDK is coming. Personally, I don't like the idea at all. My big concern is that even though manual will still be available, they will be difficult to sell on later. And in time the manual might disappear forever. I fear that's already happening at Ferrari.

Unless the DFI engines prove troublesome, I can't see any advantage to not having DFI, so I'm not sure there's a good case for the current cars becoming collectible in the near term. Maybe for historical value in the long term?

However, it is possible that the 998 will have a flat-8. That would substantially change the character of the 911, possibly making the 997 an instant classic, much like the 996 did for the 993.

No...the current car will be obsolete just like the 996GT3 is now.

I'm just happy that I am getting a brand spankin' new '08 GT3 for under 110K, even if it is only $5.00 under!
FYI, I sold 996GT2's back in 02 for around 235 +.............almost 20 years ago those dinosaur tech 911 Speedster sold between 50-75 over..................so 911's have gotten substantial premiums.

High rollers in US metropolitan cities want instant gratification and provide that basis for adjusted market prices. Various Daimler or BMW products have/are commanding high premiums over MSRP because of the same marketforces and no retail automobile store will feel one bit sorry for some rich guys blowing their money. In the high end market you make your money with the rich not poor so better do your best to maximize profits because the same clients ain't going to buy a Boxster or base Cheyenne of which dealerships have grass growing underneath them.

yeah... what I was told also... but am praying its not true and hoping Porsche will be greedy enough to produce more so I can get a 08+ or 09 GT3 RS...

if you look at when the 997 GT 3s went into production it was 2 years after the intro of 997 base models... Don't exactly remember when the 996 GT 3s went into production...
