Default does a welded rear half cage make the rear end more active or have no affect ...

- I am new to cages
- I have a wleded Safety Designes rear half cage in my 997gt3
- I have noted what I believe to be a more active rear end than others (everyone seems to say their car pushes)
- In my 9 track events with the factory track settings (-2f, -2.5r) running 32f, 35r hot I feel that my car is always on the edge of throttle overstear not pushing as others have noted
- other than removing the factory seats and replacing them with 996gt3 seats (less weight) I only have the welded 50# rollbar

My question is:

Does a welded rear rollbar act as an additional rear sway bar?

Thanks

Paul

it makes the rear stiffer (espeically welded), but i doubt it will be so much that it causes oversteer.

i have the same alignment as yours and 1 from soft up front, full stiff rear. car was neutral at first, now i start to push it a bit, it exhibits push now.

my guess due to worn rear tires from all the track miles mooty puts on the car

sorry.
my car was aligned to track number per manual BEFORE i got on track.
first 3 days i was taking it very easy with the car, felt neutral.
now i try to enter turns faster and "fix" it during the turn... now i can feel the push.

what i am trying to say is that once you push it, the factory numbers has some understr in it.

well, i did fly off a turn at 90mph so bounced off entry berm.. perhaps that threw off the alignment?

the car was too smooth. i didn't get the sense of speed like my lotus or 996gt3, by the time i looked at my gauges at turn in, i was like.... sh**t, i aint gonna make it.... trail brake longer and longer, try to scrub as much speed as i can.... hahahahaha. it was quite a ride!

Thanks for being more specific. I'm taking my GT3 in tomorrow for the "track" alignment and just wanted to make sure its still the way to go. My "as received alignment" felt good but I'm probably not pushing the car nearly as hard as you. I only have 2 track days so far in the GT3.

Be careful about following the advice on alignment from the RS people - my experience has been that the RS seems to push more than the GT3.

997GT3North, maybe you are driving more aggressivley with the added security of a role bar. Was there any forcing to get the cage in?? Was the car perfectly level? Maybe it did stiffen the rear substaintly? Good luck sorting it! Looking forward to hearing your resolution.

A good starting place is the factory setting in your owners manual. From there a host of variables come into play, including the track, the type of tires, and your own driving style. Its a learning process, to be sure.

Good luck!
