Will a GT4 disappoint after a GT3?

I have a PTS/CCX 718 GT4 coming, and I am going to sell my 991.2 GT3 Touring.

I had a 997.2 GT3RS.

I notice the power difference between the 997.2 and 991.2. I also notice the size and steering differences. To me, the sound and ride quality are similar between the two cars.

Will the GT4 be a reasonable alternative to the GT3?

I don’t know about disappoint, but the cars can’t be more different. Newer car, newer tech, so probably a little more comfortable to drive? And it’s mid engine, so I imagine a bit more comfortable to drive on track?

I don’t think I could give up a 991.2 Touring for a GT4, unless you’re chasing lap times. But you don’t know until you try!

My limited experience with a GT4 says you will notice the difference. I find the GT4 to ride rather harsh compared to the 911 platform cars. Mid-engine give a go-cart feel and with the right setup, turn-in will be a lot faster than a GT3. Yes, GT4 will be slow compared to a 991.2 GT3. It won't sound nearly as good either. GT4 is the track whore, the GT3 Touring is the street driver. If you're buying a GT4 for street driving, you're going the wrong way.

Can't say I'd pick a 718 GT4 over either iteration of GT3.

I sold my first 997.2 GT3 after acquiring a 981 GT4. It was a great car but a let down comparatively. I have decent seat time in the 718 model and it's better but still not more fun to drive than either GT3 gen.

Unless love the chassis feel that much more in the GT4 over the rear engine feel of the 911, I'd expect it would be a disappointment. Remember of course, this IS a 997 forum. :)

For me, 997 gen GT cars are the best driving experience Porsche has ever made. Everything else is 2nd place.

I haven’t driven the gt4rs yet but the 981 and 718 gt4 weren’t my favorite. Tho i did really like my 981 spyder. Fwiw i also don’t like the 991gt cars. The 997 gt is my favorite of the bunch.

Is PTSCCX like the LGBTQRS of Porsche? 🤣

but in all seriousness it’s so subjective. Some like mid engine. Some like rear engine. Some like both. Engine will be much tamer than a GT3 touring. But maybe you’ll enjoy the smaller car. Maybe need GT4RS… I’ve only driven a 981gt4 and 718 Spyder but own a 997gt3. Very different. I’ll say the gt4rs I got a ride in was pretty epic. But depends on where you use your cars and how you drive them too. track guy? Lots of track experience? Comfortable with cars at the limit? Some fun gt4 easier to drive faster who have less experience and they like that. I’d say go drive one

I think the 981 GT4 is about as much fun as you can have behind the wheel, and I greatly enjoyed the car (more so than I expected to).

That being said, I would not sell a 997.x or 991.x based GT3 for any GT4. The only GT4 variant that I'd consider as a true replacement car is the current GT4 RS, which gives up very little to anything.

I owned a 2016 GT4 while owning a 997.2 GT3RS and a 997.2 Turbo. I loved the GT4 except for the tall first gear. If you're getting a new GT4, first gear is no longer a problem and.....the new cars have more HP. Here in Co if I was going to take a spirited drive through the twisties, I'd be taking a GT4.
Funny, the last couple of weeks I've been looking at 2023 GT4's. Maybe it's time to get another!!

Hi, thank you for all of your thoughts. I think I already knew the answer going in…

You feel fortunate to get a build allocation, so you take it. When I sold my 997.2 GT3RS I figured “I can always buy another”. The sound and power difference between the 991.2 GT3 and 718 GT4 will probably be where I will be disappointed, but I shouldn’t keep both cars.

Thanks again. Enjoy the remaining days of summer.

I guess I have to call that 'very little' after my first statement. :nono:

Having owned a new 981 GT4 for three years and a 997.1 GT3 for the past nearly five years, I certainly prefer the GT3.

Hamhands 09-02-2023 04:33 PM

I wouldn't trade my GT3 for a GT4 and I have a decent amount of seat time in both. So yes, I would say a GT4 would disappoint after a GT3.

ABSOLUTELY DO NOT go to a GT4.

There is no Cayman platform that can impress you after the cars you've had.

I've frankly given *ALL* the 981/982 platforms a fair shake, including all street cars and all generations of the race cars. Each and every one left me (and in case of the racecars, my co-drivers) wishing for more because I knew Porsche can and should be more.

Waited a year and half to get the GT4RS street car. That poor thing lasted in my garage for all of 10 days. I sold it without making a dime, out of genuine spite.

Story Here:
Doesn't make GT4s bad cars (I don't wanna get lyched by other parts of RL) but they just DO NOT STACK UP for discerning owners who have seen more.
