Future Value 997.1 GT3 RS vs 991 GT2 RS

Looking at trading in my GT3 RS 997.1 for a new GT2 RS but am concerned about future depreciation. I love both cars and am looking for some opinions to weigh my options. Thanks!

Share some details on your 997 RS as there are some members looking to purchase.

If you don't like depreciation keep what you have.

Less risk in your current car

cajerseyboy 07-10-2019 04:52 PM

Agreed. I expect a very large depreciation hit on all 991.2 GT models but especially the 2RS. They are sitting at dealers right now.

Anything 997 GT has essentially bottomed out. Anything 991 has not. Does that answer your question?

Steven_H 07-10-2019 05:21 PM

997.1 GT3RS depreciated significantly and has recently begun to rebound a bit. One of the last 'steel key' cars and more analog than the 991s - also smaller. That said, if you keep the GT2RS ten or eleven years (age of 997.1 GT3RS), it may surprise you. The 2011 GT2RS similarly lost value and then rebounded.

As others have said, 997s are at the bottom of the market, 991s are at the top of the market.

Not entirely sure that 997RSs (especially 997.2RSs) will not continue to INCREASE in value. Last of the Metzger cars, last of the hydraulic steering, etc.

Mr. Adair 07-10-2019 06:57 PM

I think 991 GT2RS’s will hold their value the best of any of the 991 cars. Early 991 GT3’s and RS’s have really taken a huge hit. I think 991.2 3RS’s will hold better than either of those because they are better cars. New GT2 RS’s are damn special. They are going to make a bunch but they are very special cars just like the 997 Gen GT2’s.

Also pure production numbers.. supply demand is in favor of this generation which came in the midst of the biggest financial crisis in recent history. 991 are being printed much like our money these days... as many as they can sell.

Look at the 964 Turbo and 993 Carrera S .. the production numbers + desirability is what drives the prices upwards.

The 997.1 GT3 RS has the lowest production numbers of any GT3 RS, especially an 08.
Let's also factor in the future interest of a Manual or a PDK which may be the biggest factor.

the term "depreciation" is thrown around randomly like IRR.
most ppl simply do not understand it.
depreciation is never linear, constant; thus it's linked to "time"
you didn't now discuss your time horizon, your used of the car (mileage matters)...
are u holding it for 10, 15, 35 years?
will u b around to enjoy the appreciation or suffer from the depreciation?

Steve Theodore 07-11-2019 11:44 AM

Plenty of unknowns in predicting the future, but others have addressed it well.

Other things to consider. Color and condition of each. Meaning an ultra-rare color with low mileage will be a hockey stick in terms of value over time for either car. So comparing an average mile, standard color 997.1 GT3 RS with a low mileage, PTS 991.2 GT2 RS will lead to unusual results, and vice versa.

Go with the car that speaks to you the loudest, particularly if you plan to keep it for the long term. I would personally put my money on a 997.1 GT3 RS for the long term, but they are indeed in different places on the depreciation curve and the future may hold some surprises for all of us.

Mr. Adair 07-11-2019 12:11 PM

Per usual everybody has provided great info for you. That said, I hope you have or will have a chance to drive a 991 GT2 RS because the two cars couldn't be more different in almost every way.
