Questions on GT3 RS Purchase
Have had a TTS for six months. May seem a bit crazy but, bored already. It’s a great car. But really can’t be pushed on anything but a track. So, I’m looking to get into something more visceral. From everything I’ve read, a manual 997 GT3 RS would fit the bill.
Been reading the forum and starting to shop. Trying to decide between 3.6 and 3.8. Not looking for a collectors car. The car will be tracked lightly but mainly used as a canyon carver. Is there enough of a difference between the 3.6 and 3.8 in real world driving to justify the price difference? Also, any known problems or specific things I should watch out for as I start my search (other than the coolant pipe issue and over revs)? Thanks very much. |
Both are great cars. 3.8 is going to have a bit more power and torque and many would consider the 997.2 GT3 RS, just about as good as it gets. The only other thing you need to watch for on the 3.8 cars are the cam adjuster bolts backing out. Someone should be able to chime in more on this subject.

Some like 997.1 RS, some like 997.2 RS. Appearance plays a role, but so do the changes in car. The extra tq in the 997.2 and its suspension makes a noticeable difference. Different animals but plenty hold the 997.2 RS right under the 997 4.0. My money will go towards a 997.2 RS

I’m leaning towards a 997.1 at this point. Prefer the looks. Like the price point. One of the benefits of buying a 997.1 is that it leaves me with enough of a budget to customize the suspension and possibly engine to my specific “needs”. If I feel it needs more HP or Torque, it may get the Sharkwerks 3.9 treatment. Speaking of which, would love feedback on the 3.9 from anyone who has bit the bullet.
Thanks again. |
My two cents...
If you are serious about a 3.9 or similar engine work, the better economics are a high mileage non-RS GT3. The RS premium will evaporate when you touch the engine. |
Agreed, to a point. That’s why I’m looking for a 20kish mile GT3 RS. No interest in a collectors car/garage Queen. Given that I am going to drive the car (that’s the whole point) seems silly to pay a low-mileage premium.

Thanks again. The 997.1 is a much nicer looking car than the 2, especially when you look at the wings, the 1 is more tasteful. Plenty of power and amazing balance, you won't look back. Keep us posted on your acquisition. |
I think a .1 GT3RS with 20-40k miles should be a bit easier to find, and could probably pick it up for $120-140k.

I have a 7.1 and "technically a 7.2" (4.0). You can't go won't. Good luck. |

I owed a .1 GT3 and today have a .2 GT3 with a 2011 GT3RS engine. The hp between the two is huge. I'd search for a higher mileage .2 RS and buy.

I could be wrong but when I was on the hunt for an RS I couldn't find any .1 cars with factory carbon buckets so that swayed me a little bit to the later iteration.

That and the power may push me towards a .2. However, I have not driven one yet. Need to get my hands on one and check the handling.
