Default Successful Emissions Testing

I took the RS that I got from Mr. Adair in for the Colorado emissions testing today. Of course I had done some reading on here regarding the issues the CA folks have had passing emissions. Since my car has a Shark Werks center bypass and tune I was curious to see how it would do.

It was a non event and I am very pleased.

Great news! I need to have Colorado emissions done on my .1 GT3 and am dreading them running it on the dyno. Being a 2007, this is the first year for the dyno test. Should be interesting.

Cars with OBDII no longer have to do the roller / sniffer test in Colorado. They simply plug into the OBDII port and make sure all readiness codes show "READY". Pretty much all cars post 2000 fall into this.

I took my 2007 Carrera in for emissions a month or so ago expecting just the OBD test, but they put it on the dyno. When I inquired as to the necessity of the dyno test, they informed me that all cars manufactured after 1982 that are at least 12 years old require the dyno test. Unfortunately, 2007 cars are now subjected to the dyno.

My smog guy can pass a car with long tubes and no cats. No more rollers or sniffers and it's just a plug in from here on out.

I think things may be different in Colorado. The following bullet points are from the CDPHE website, and are consistent with what I was told at the testing station last month with my C2 (private shops don't conduct inspections here):
  • New vehicles are exempt from inspection for the first seven model years.
    • A 2011 vehicle, for example, doesn't need an inspection until 2018.
  • Vehicles 8 through 11 years old will be inspected using onboard diagnostics (OBD).
    • If the “Check Engine” light is turned on, these vehicles will fail the inspection and need repairs.
  • Vehicles manufactured beginning in 1982 that are at least 12 years old will be inspected using the “I/M 240” dynamometer (treadmill) test.
    • In 2016, this requirement applies to model year 1982 through 2005 vehicles and so on.
    • A check engine light on a vehicle at least 12 years old may still pass if the I/M 240 test can be run and the car can pass the test. An advisory may be issued.
I was always under the impression that things were as you guys suggest above (i.e., plug-in test only for OBDII cars)...hence my surprise. I'll report back, but I'm expecting that they'll at least try to put my 2007 GT3 on the dyno based on the above and my recent experience.

I'm in Denver and used to go to the Air Care Smog station at 10190 E Warren Ave, 80247. Everytime I would go in they would simply plug into the OBDII and verify the all readiness codes are set and no CEL is illuminated. There was no roller test and when I asked them they said they only use it on pre-OBDII cars. Just my experience

That had always been my experience too. We'll see what happens when I go later this week. powdrhound, curious, what year is your car and when did you last do emissions? Based on the 12-year rule referenced in my post above, 2007 cars would have just fallen into the dyno category this year (assuming they use model year), which explains why my GT3s (I've had two, both 2007s) were never put on the dyno in the past.

I had a 2011 BMW inspected in January and it only had the plug-in test (no dyno). Some friends that have had emissions recently have provided the following data points: 2005 997.1 (dyno test), 2006 BMW (dyno test), 2011 997.2 (no dyno test).

Took the GT3 in for emissions today. It passed. DME only. I expressed concern upon arrival about ground clearance on the rollers, and the tech told me that they should be able to test using DME only. In talking to the manager after the test, he indicated that management can deviate from the roller test if there are ground clearance issues or, I got the sense, if they perceive that the car is of a certain value. There may be other reasons as well. He told me that, in general, however, they do put rear-wheel-drive 911s that are 12 years old or older on the rollers. The wheelbase of all-wheel-drive 911s are often too short to put on the rollers, so no rollers for the all-wheel-drive cars.

Excellent! I never ran into anything either but that has to do with MN being about as low tech emissions wise as you can get.

Hi zdet, which smog station did you take your GT3 to? And would you happen to know the name of the manager. I need to have mine done.

@PumpkinRS I usually go to the station at 44th and McIntyre. I had my RS done in April and it was DME only (and, given COVID, you don't even have to get out of the car).
