Default Interpreting DME Readouts - new video

Hey guys. This has been a long time in the works, but we just released a video on how to interpret DME readouts. It's long, but it's pretty comprehensive. I've seen so much wrong information on the intrawebs posted by armchair experts, both here, on BaT, and elsewhere, that I wanted to clear up some of the misunderstandings and present it in a fun format. (it starts a little slow but gets going towards the end!).

Please watch, comment (only good ones of course), share, and reach out with any questions.

Fireside chat with Mr. 997. Hashtags spot on. Lounge music? Check. Humor? Perfect. Video? Educational. Buy a car from him. #mr997

Doug... I've been getting to know my new to me 997.2 GT3 over the last couple months. I noticed that when the stability programs are turned on you get that wimpy soft over rev like you showed in the video. When all the nannies are turned off it will give a hard pip like you showed with the 996. Do you know if the hard limiter will let it bounce to 9k and score an over rev? Things were happening too quickly at that point for me to have my face buried in the tach.

As a side note, I actually didn't care too much about the over rev report. I used the seller's provided report, which as anyone should know all bets are off as soon as the car drives away from the scanner. These reports seem to be most useful at making people upset who don't know much about cars...... and not much else.

Good question, but the answer is no! Sport mode on/off, TC/SC off, still will not go to 9k. And I held my right foot in it without shifting. No overrevs recorded.

Great video. I was looking at a GT3RS that had the following, I guess it wasn't as bad as I initially thought:

Range 1: 489 @ 180
Range 2: 231 @ 179.5
Range 3: 186 @ 179.5
Range 4: 166 @ 179.5
Range 5: 0
Range 6: 0

i can speak from experience. 997 GT3 bounced off rev limiter don't trigger revs! doing a 4-2 shift WILL! :-)

I would pass on that one. Those are some very high revs....that is definitely a misshift.

I'm confused by this, since in your video you showed a 43-count ignition increase when you essentially bounced off the rev limiter on a upshift. Once bounce, 43 ignitions (by your corrected math), in a 996 GT3.

So how is that different than holding your foot in it, and getting no overrevs recorded? ... was that in a 997 GT3? and thus Ques: Is there a difference between a 996 GT3, and a 997 GT3 from that perspective?

... + follow-up Ques: When you say above it "will not go to 9K",... what do you mean by that?

TIA,
=Steve

Also, AutoWerks, if you don't mind me indulging here.... What is the difference between a "wimpy soft over rev",... and a "hard pip" ??

I am guessing that you are talking about the sound you get when you hit 9K,... & the rev limiter ceases ignition firing, and we get the sound of the revs backing off for a split-second.

But when I first read your post, I actually though you were talking about that "soft" uplift in revs on a regular shift just prior to redline,... which I have attributed to my lack of timing between clutch depression & gas lift off, at the moment of shifting, and the revs RISE slightly just before I engage the next gear. There are other threads that talk about this as well.

Thanks,
=Steve

996 GT3 vs 997 GT3. The 996 GT3 Range one is at redline. The 997 GT3 range one is at 9k rpm. You cannot record a Range One in a 997 GT3 no matter how hard you try bouncing it off the rev limiter.

I assume a mechanical overrev would be a lot different than intentionally bouncing off rev limiter. That could take it to 9k and well beyond

Thanks Doug. And since it seems relevant to this conversation as well.... I'll re-post a chart that Igooz' posted over in the GT2 thread...
https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-...997-gt2-7.html

This chart would be even better if it showed what the redline is for each of these vehicles, ... making it easy to determine if that car registers over-revs at redline, or something higher...
