Default Anyone gone from a 997.1 GT3 to 991.1 RS?

It's probably futile asking the question after the decision , but I am moving on my 997.1 GT3 and taking a bit of a break from GT cars whilst I tackle some other life projects, I'm planning to buy a 991.1 RS probably late next year at this stage. Has anyone made the move and regretted it? To help answer that, I mainly used the GT3 for track purposes, but I like the dual functionality of the road car, hence I have not gone to a cup (yet, lol), my wife (to be) hates the fix back seats in the GT3 and the bad ride... the limited time I've spent in the 991.1 cabin, seems much more spacious and comfy, I am hoping she will be more comfortable with it... might seem ridiculous but I am not very good at being self indulgent, I prefer to share these experiences.

Cheers

The 991rs is massively more capable and comfortable on the road.
Is it a “better” drive? You might want to get a little wheel time in one.
The 997 are pretty special cars. The 991 is better in all respects.
Except. It feels nearly overly capable. Like it does the work. I think driver connectedness maybe is the word.
Ive skipped the 991 and went other way. OLD CARS.

Driver connectedness - great term for something that seems to be going away as cars overall get more and more capable.....

I recently went from a GT4 to a 997.1 GT3 - glad I did.

Thanks!

So it seems fair to say that everything that makes it a great road car, takes something away from the driving experience, nothing to do with its capabilities (obviously) but we lose some of the tactile feedback we get in the older cars... I have spent seat time in the 991.1 GT3, but not the RS.

The 997 is a special car for sure, and I'd love a 997 RS.. but they are literally double the money of GT3 when you see them listed... lots of 991.1 RS delivered here, plenty for sale, and getting cheaper by the day.. perfect for a weekend hack like me I think, and I could live with those compromises...

And I hear you on the OLD CARS thing... I just pulled the trigger on a long hood to give me those unadulterated driving thrills.

The idea is to have old & new.

I agree Spyerx & Astrix. Well said both of you. ... and I am also of the mindset on having both old & new. '91 964 Turbo, and '10 997.2 GT3.

I'm afraid to drive a RS anything. I know it will ruin me, so I'm trying to stay away. But you also bring up a good point in having the Significant-other happy in joining you on drives (weekend or to/from the track). I'm lucky that my wife loves to drive a stick & drives hard. So we actually battle for drivers seat time. BUT she is also a comfort girl. No way she would live with LWBS. She said that was a deal-breaker on a GT3. So for us we went PCCB & 14-way Sport seats and we're both happy. We do not track. All street tour driving.

So,... Astrix, I think you're heading in the right direction on the 991 RS, since your soon-to-be-wife will be part of the equation (AND you have a long hood to satisfy those solitary weekend drives of your own). The increase in suspension performance (ie ride harshness improves over your gen1 997),... and overall ease of driving the 991 may be the answer for both of you.

Plus, if she doesn't mind the LWBS in a 991.1 RS, then you may have a winner with that decision. To me the bigger deal is whether you can live with PDK, verses missing your manual.

Good luck & HAVE FUN!!

991 is a phenomenally capable track/road car combo. I don't see 997 and 991 having much in common. I've been shockingly surprised how much more of that "feel" spyrex refers to has been injected back into the 991.2 3rs. 1.1rs is a more comfortable road car. 1.2rs feels like Porsche put some of that connected/raw feel back into the formula and compromised its road manners a bit.

That being said, I think I'll always own a 997 rs. I'm enjoying the heck out of 991.2 3rs as a track/road combo toy for now but no idea if I'll keep or just trade for then next GT (more likely)?

Good luck. It's worth at least trying the new stuff.

Thanks! I think she'll be fine in the LWBS, I've sat in those and they are definitely more comfortable than the 6 GT3 Recaro's I had in my 997.

I think the idea would be to compress a bunch of cars into the RS, I actually bought a tiptronic Boxster late last year, so we could start going on the local Porsche club social runs again, and most importantly she will drive it, and enjoys to do so... so I don't think I will be bored with the PDK in the RS... especially not if I have a 901 transmission to keep me trained in the other ride.

Interesting, a bunch of guys I have been running with over the years have gotten out of 991.1 RS recently and into 991.2 RS now.. I'll be interested to see how they think it compares! I recall the 991.2 GT3 RS video with Kevin Estre setting the ring record, the car looked so lively when it was on the limit.

Get a clean 997.2 RS for the money instead 991.1 RS.

For what he's wanting, not sure that makes any sense. Personally, I'd take a 7.2rs over a 1.1rs, unless I'm wanting it for the reasons the OP stated above.

I would also consider a used AMG gtr. Great car for the needs you mention. Comfortable when you need to. And an absolute blast when you push it.

I ran all the 997 GT3 on track and I very much prefer the 991.1RS for the track, also drove the .2RS and it’s much edgier.
The best part of the Touring - Gt3 - RS range is that they can make the RS more extreme. And they did.

I traded my 997.2 GT3 for a 991.1 RS over a month ago.

I often told myself I'd take the GT3 to the grave with me. That it was the "one".

But let me put it this way: so far, not once have I missed the GT3.

The RS is simply a better car in nearly every aspect. And as it should be, it's a newer GT car (and it's an RS).

As Jrtaylor9 said, they hardly have anything in common and the two simply cannot be compared.

Of course, YMMV, but if the RS does not put an ear-to-ear grin on your face, in my opinion no car will.

So, to answer your question, no you will absolutely not regret it.

And yes, I still love 997 GT cars and I would love to add a 997.2 RS to the future stable if/when funds allow for it. Had I just opted for a 997.2 RS from the onset (before I bought my GT3), I'd likely be singing a different tune right now.

^^^ I'm guessing then,... that having a manual GT3 was not that important to you. I considered the same thing you did,... but my wife & I just COULD NOT bring ourselves to buying a PDK (no matter what car it was, RS or not).

... and my question would then be,... based on the price differential between a 997.2 RS, and a 991.1 RS,... was price the only reason you decided not to trade up to a 997.2 RS??

you say they cannot be compared,... and maybe that's true on a technical level,.... but in the end we're really talking about "Smiles for Miles",... which certainly can be compared.
