Awesome theme! Same here - rattle is pure charm and reminds me of my Ducafi Monster S4RS dry clutch. Sound like a tractor? Maybe - drove a lot of those growing up too. Recently replaced my clutch and upgraded to 4.0 clutch and LWFW which is noticeably lighter than 3.8 RS LWFW.

Interesting observation re engine braking - always said the RS gears down like a sport bike.

Single mass flywheel was one of my favorite mods on my GT3. The noise combined with cup cables is awesome. Do it.

It's fascinating for an old man like me to hear the different perspectives of the two generations that followed mine. I'm not sure I could live with some of my project cars or cars I was lucky enough to drive for magazine tests. One thing that is almost universal is something to the effect of "if I had an F40 I'd be done". That's sure how I felt when my dad brought home a Pirelli poster of an F40 shortly after the ROW launch in 1987. Similar comments about Yellow Bird or more appropriately CTR 01. After reading half the comments in this thread the phrase be careful what you wish for comes to mind Those cars make zero concessions to any form of comfort. I'm either the cranky old man my wife says I am or younger enthusiasts are getting soft JBO

My wife says I'm like a grouchy 70 year old in a 70 year old body. I'm 47 but years of weightlifting destroyed nearly every part of my body. My dad brought the infamous F40 poster and the Pirelli poster of the overhead of the yellow Countach home the same day. The Countach went under the bed and the F40 went on the wall. I still have it. I grew up very very poor so to have owned or driven some of this stuff makes me a lucky man. BTW I also have the Memorex poster of the black SC Targa being blown off by the sound system in the 911. And that's still hanging on the wall. For what it's worth I'm not an ageist. I just wish more young people were into cars. JBO

I almost typed the exact same post. I also have a dry clutch on my NSR 250sp Honda, when I clutch in the rattle is right up there with a make out session with a gal that out of your league..

  • Minimal noticeable change in driving / engine response, maybe a bit less engine braking??

I'll switch back once I am bored enough to drop the drivetrain again.

I've had 4.0 LWFW installed on both my .1 and .2 GT3's, on the .1 I had the Cup shifter cables and hated the chatter transmitted into the cabin! On my .2 I learned my lesson and never touched the cables and the chatter rarely bothers me.

The difference is a bit freer revving engine, and I'd do it again (though it only makes sense if you're already dropping the transmission, otherwise too much labor).

I love my LWFW in my .1 GT3. I also have Rennline Blue motor mounts, and Poly Tranny mounts. I love the chatter and slight vibration. I believe it adds to the character of the car. I want my cars to be an experience every time I turn the key. If I want a smooth riding car I wouldn't buy a older 911. I am fine with noise and some vibration.

On a side note - I changed out the engine mounts to the Blue Rennline option and added Fister Tranny mount on my 993 and it was too crazy. Car was vibrating at the stop light even without a LWFW. I changed the motor mounts to the yellows and 90% of the NVH went away (Perfect). Once I get my LWFW for the 993 we will see what happens. I will switch out the Tranny mounts if needed. The LWFW is staying not matter what!! The 993 needs the extra motor response IMHO. Feels slow to rev stock.

LWFW has its' advantages however, after driving many "sticks" over the years, getting used to the "now very sensitive" gas pedal continues to be a challenge (rev matching on down shift). As I have air cooled, they require a more aggressive pedal for the same situation. Still fun though!

From what my mechanic (Mistress Porsche in Silver Lake, CA, who raced GT3s) told me was that the 997.1 engines were fine with the LWFW, but the 997.2 tended to have more problems with bolts coming loose.

15k miles now on a LWFW in a 997.1 and no problems. TBH, other than making rev matching a bit faster, it makes the car much harder to drive for anyone else, as it stalls much more easily. I probably wouldn't do it again, unless I really needed the weight savings, and I'm not that good on the track yet, since I need more seat time.

Edit - RS pulley was also installed, as well as the 4.0 clutch.

Who's your mechanic now that Mistress closed last week? Curious where to take my car when I ship it back to LA in a couple of months.
