I feel the 1M is a great offering but not for the price. It has all of the right M bits on it but the interior in the 1 is uncomfortable and I much prefer the e9x M3 with the NA V8 if you are looking for something like that.

drove my buddy's 1m. it's a great fun car that u can also dd and not get too much attention. the interior is bland, but the drive makes up for it. being so few of them, the value should hold up quite well if u keep it in good condition. nothing like a porsche, but good for what it is.

i've had an e92 m3 and i feel the reason the price difference is so big is down to production numbers. you're right, there is no contest between the engines. that's why all things considered, plus being a dd, i chose the m3 (6mt) even though having just said good things about the 1m lol.

I test drove a 1M shortly before purchasing an E92 M3 (I made the wrong choice if I was looking to monetize the transaction, as the 1M is now worth $12k more and the M3 $15k less).

The 1M was precise, dynamic, and a whole lot of fun. The M3 felt like the more expensive car with the bigger engine and although very precise, much "larger" in feel. I slightly preferred the 1M, but coming from the 135i, wanted something different at the time. Looking back, the 1M would have been the better choice, as I prefer the go-cart feel.

M3 bigger, more stable (for some that’s a benefit, for some downside) M3 has a wonderful engine, but here in the UK it’s expensive to run due to its thirst.
1M Coupe has much more fun/playful chassis, can be spikey if you’re used to the stability of the M3, but far more adjustable with your right foot.
M3 engine requires revving to really wake it up, whereas the 1M’s N54 derived engine has huge amounts of low down torque that’s easily available (and allows you to steer the car on the throttle more easily)
I had two 1M’s, I modified the second example with AP brakes, fixed bucket seats, N55 exhaust mis section and a geo tweak.
it transformed it. As for the M2 being easier to extract power from, that’s great for bar room bragging rights, but a well set up 1M with standard power output is more than fast enough around the twisties.
Fitting decent seats and an alcantara covered steering wheel transformed the car.

I put 75k sideways miles on my 1M before selling it. It was the most fun DD I've ever owned (and I've had a bunch), largely because of the flaws. And it is flawed... Some previous thoughts, also a little comparison vs GT3s:

My favorite car of all time, total sleeper, feels old school and is really fun to drive, bonus that it is rare.

It was the first stylized m variant.

Today an m3 is a stylized 340

The 1m was a stylized 135.

M cars sort of don't exist anymore so I guess they are all valuable. Lol
