996GT2 vs 997GT2... worth the expense ?

Have you considered changing the OEM coil-overs too something else?
I just replaced the OEM coil-overs on my 996 GT3 to Ohlins Road and Track. Huge improvement in ride comfort. There are other brands as well and I am sure the forum can help you out as well and provide guidance to get a little more comfort in the ride.
(Save the OEM coil-overs for the next owner.)

Currently I have a 996GT2.
If I were 20 years younger the question wouldn't be asked BUT I find the ride a little too extreme.
Plus no (defeatable) nannies.
I used to race Formula cars so a stiff ride is (was) acceptable. The 6GT2 is too much.
Ah... the old days
Is the 7GT2 softer or can I expect the same stiffness ?
I'm considering a 599 GTB as an alternative.

Or Just get a nice 997 GT2 with sofas, but you will still be lacking in the suspension department when compared with a 996 gt2 with upgraded suspension.

Why not upgrade the suspension to something better than even the 991 Gt3? Tractive + DSC or just get a quality set of coilovers and have them set for comfort.

Crazy or not I actually LIKE the looks of the 6GT2 over the 7GT2.
To me it seems more svelte yet still wicked underneath.

I agree on design. And the market on the 996 is moving up super fast. I know of cars that have traded at $145K and $165K recently. Perfect cars a year ago were trading for $115-120K. I'm looking to get another, my fourth.....

e88 on a gt2 and it becomes even more everything.
As for the suspension, just go for the suspension. I would get the tractive option, I think Toby has that option, he might be a bigger help, but from everything I heard and read, it transforms the car into a comfortable flat car.
