Plenty of threads in here on that. It depends if you have Bose or not and how much you want to spend. We can't answer that for you. New head unit and Nav TV adapter will run you over 1500. Or gut the whole thing at a custome shop and spend lots more

Search threads, many stereo upgrades from mild to wild. It depends on your ears and how much you're willing to spend.

Hey SFRick... I also just picked up a 2006 997, and I have the same question! Yes, there are plenty of threads on the subject...
https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...11-w-bose.html
https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...lled-mine.html
...but many of them are from years past, so, recent recommendations from 997 owners who have done this would be appreciated by SFRick and me.

I have the Bose audio system, but anyhow we probably both have a PCM (Porsche Communication Management) stereo head unit that has a fiber-optic connection to the amplifiers, which means that the options are...
1 - buy a new stereo head unit (probably a 2 DIN head unit with a video display and navigation) AND a M.O.S.T adapter (https://navtv.com/products/NTV-KIT210/most-hur-997.html). The Adapter is $650, but it lets you us your existing amplifiers, and it greatly simplifies the upgrade. That's crazy expensive for what it does.
2 - buy a Bluetooth adapter, and live with the existing PCM (but be able to listen to music, navigate or take phone calls from your phone)
3 - replace the head unit and amplifier... running copper wires from head to amplifier to replace the fiber optics
4 - replacing speakers is optional... not really necessary in my opinion

So, does anyone have a recent (in the last year or so) recommendation for an upgraded head unit with a video screen? Preferably supporting a back up camera and GPS NAV. Ideally something with a nice touchscreen and a great user interface. Thanks!

I am also considering the upgrade. I came from 2011+ M3 and my 997 looks extremely dated

THe Pioneer Avic series of double-Din head units are good, can do Apple Play or Android Play. Note if you have Sp[orts Chrono....you lose those functions as the new head units don't display it.

I went w/ Kenwood Double Din (bluetooth, ipod, and navigation), Hertz speakers, and Hertz amp. Kept existing subwoofer. Steering wheel controls work with the system. More info here:
https://cai-store.com/
Installation looks factory including the Porsche logo on start-up screen.
This system rocks!

Thanks for the helpful responses! So many of these 2 DIN units with big beautiful touchscreens don't have a volume ****... and that frustrated some guys so much that they uninstalled and went back to their PCM... https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...lled-mine.html

If you upgraded to a Kenwood, Alpine, or Pioneer NAV unit, did the lack of a volume **** drive you crazy?

What PCM functionality is permanently lost? I suppose no replacement unit has a trip computer. Will I lose any of the functions that show up on my dash, using the function stalk?

Not sure the dash will display radio or XM info if you go aftermarket. The PCM3.0 in the 997.2 has been installed on the 997.1 by a guy in the UK using OEM parts. Its on a UK 911 forum and a good read. Its doable and you keep all functionality.

Volume **** works off steering wheel as well as a button on the unit, never found it difficult to use either! Garmin maps take car of trip computer needs, phone works off screen on Kenwood.

Nobody does that, that I know of. It would be a big seller if they did.

SFR...what are you trying to accomplish? Adding features, or complete swap?
