Looking at an early 997.1 Carrera (non-S), few questions
#16
Looks to be a very similar car to mine, also and early build (12/04) with serviceable IMSB...at least it was, now I have a new engine with The Solution. My 3.6 suffered scoring.
I'm closing in on 70K, the suspension/handling is as tight as when I got it with 20K. Mine has never been tracked, and the roads around here are flat, straight and (for the most part) smooth.
As for the clutch, a stiff pedal in a 3.6 means it's coming near replacement time. The 3.8 has a self-adjusting clutch, the 3.6 not.

Three Wheelin'
Sounds like a good decision. My rule is anytime you get a bad feeling when flying a plane, sailing a boat, or buying a car...its best to turn around and go home ;-)
Re the "floaty suspension", I have a base 2006 with 19inch wheels and the suspension is rock solid, I stress "rock" when driving on SF roads. It gets pretty jarring on bumpy roads. The one you were looking at may have the stock 18" wheels which I hear has a bit more comfortable ride.
I by no means would discourage you on your journey. I daily mine and love it. However the short daily commute in cold weather would concern me a little bit. I would ask your local indy if they have any concern about bore scoring in colder weather cars like this.\
Ps - I would recommend expanding the search to out of state cars. Shipping them is cheap on uShip ($800-900) and easy. It will enable you to pull from a bigger inventory of high quality cars and get the one you really, really want.

Hi to all who previously provided advice in this thread.
Just wanted to bump this back up to provide an update on the outcome of my search. I did end up expanding my search to include other western states, and came across a CPO 2010 C2 for sale at a Porsche dealer in S. California. It was a bit over my $40K budget at ~$45K, but the fact that it was both CPO and the newer DFI engine encouraged me to stretch the budget just a bit. The dealer met me halfway at ~$43K and I ended up pulling the trigger on the Meteor Grey beauty below. It is supposed to arrive on a truck later this afternoon. I can't wait.

That's a great deal on a 2010, good find!
I assume any car with a VIN on this list has the single row, serviceable bearing.

Thanks all.
That is indeed Hoehn Porsche in Carlsbad. They were wonderful to work with.
The car arrived yesterday, and while it was unfortunately pouring rain at the time, I still had to go out and drive it. They say you shouldn't meet your hero's, but I'm happy to say that so far my first 911 lives up to the hype. She has ~60K miles on the odometer today, and I look forward to adding many more.
For anyone interested, my STI is for sale in the classified section:
