Back in 997 fold. Wheel question.
Subject to a successful PPI, I'm the proud new owner of '10 Basalt Black C2S which looks remarkably like my previous 997 in the profile pic.
The previous owner had the Carrera II S wheels painted (not powder coated) black. This is too much black for my tastes, so how do I go about restoring the wheel back to the original colour without damaging the OEM silver finish? |
I dont think there is a way to strip a second layer of paint with out cutting into the under layer. Both chemical and media blasting will dig deeper than anticipated until it hits bare metal.

they probably sanded them so there done. You have to sand them and paint them or the right way is to have a wheel finisher strip, recolor, clear powder coat them. try wheel enhancement

Thanks for the responses. I figured it would mean a total refinish.

You may want to consider seeing if anyone would be interested in trading wheels before taking them down to metal and repainting.

Good opportunity to up grade the wheels to something more unique and lighter, then just sell the black ones. I have polished and clear powdercoated Champion RS171s for sale in the Marketplace.

Id rather put my money in a new updated wheel

As others have mentioned, you're better off trying to trade someone. Good thing for you is, there are probably a lot of people willing to go from standard silver to painted black. Failing that, there are companies that specialize in second hand OEM wheels. They might work with you. Best of luck. Congrats on the new ride. Please post some photos!

see if you can work a trade, for the new paint + primer to get ample grip on the wheel, the wheel would have needed to have been sanded down.
