Default New Member: 997 C4S, Rattle at 3K-4K Range

Hello All,

This is my first time posting on the forums... I've been reading up a lot here and using a lot of the information found to help me pick up my first Porsche!

3 Weeks ago i pulled the trigger on a 2007 911 C4S Silver/Cocoa 6MT with sport chrono, PSE, Nav, Bose w/27K miles!

Car drives like a dream and is completely different then anything I've ever owned coming from an E46 M3 and an F10 M5!

After driving it these past few weeks I'm beginning to get used to the car's rattles and nuances, but one that I can't seem to figure out is this metallic rattle in the 3K-4K range. I don't think its a natural sound as I have a cousin with an '06 C2S and his doesn't make that same sound. I hear it weather I'm in motion, just revving it to that range, with PSE on and off.

I am going to try to capture it in a video and post it, was curious though if anyone else has had the same thing happening with their 997.

I had a similar rattle...it went away after I installed the Numeric shifter and cables. My speculation is that the stock shifter cable(s) may have been either not fully secured or the rubber grommet that is around the cables where they pass into the cab may have been not fully set.

I believe my car has the factory short shifter. But I don't see how the two would connect ( As far as the rattle sound goes). The rattling I'm hearing is coming from the engine bay (Just noticed I didn't specify that in my OP).

Mine had the OEM SSK as well. My sound also came from the rear right about where the rear seat backrest are located by from underneath the car.

I heard this sound (I'm the cousin referenced by the OP). It is not a normal sound and happens sporadically. It can be repeated 10 times in a row, and then it will go away for ten minutes and return again. I think it happens in every gear, though I can only confirm it happens in 1st and 2nd gears.

It is not coming from the shifter, shifter cables or the rear backseat area. It is definitely coming from the engine bay. It almost sounds like a worn out bearing that is being over-run.

I had a 2005 911 Carrera that had a nasty sounding metallic rattle at about 2300 RPMs. Took many attempts for the dealer to figure out what it was. They replaced a catalytic converter and the engine mounts. Eventually they narrowed it down to the oil pump. I never had a problem with oil pressure. But the pump was making the noise. New pump and the sound went away for good. Without hearing your sound I can't verify if it is the same sound. But this is something to potentially look into.

Check the welds on the brackets of the PSE. Similar sound when mine broke.

as the prior person commented, check areas around your exhaust. The PSE has tabs and a cable linkage which has metal tabs and clips which break off and cause a rattle/jingle.

Thanks for the help in describing Alan! I can confirm it happens in all gears but only in the 3K-4K Range.

I wouldn't call it a "Nasty" rattle but it's definitely a rattle the type that only someone that drives a 911 daily would find off. Its actually very subtle unless your looking for it.

Hope your wrong.

It's funny you mention the brackets on the PSE because the other day I noticed that my right exhaust tips hang out a bit lower and stick out a bit more then my left do. I was told this could possibly be related to motor mounts. And if there is a loose/Broken bracket that could definitely be causing this... I'm going to have to get it to a shop to check this out.

This is probably it. Makes sense as it is during the 3k-4k range that the PSE valve opens up. Also could be resonance related.

Check what transmission mount inserts have been used. I replaced my stock tranny mount inserts with after-market ones (Function-First: Orange) and there is a noticeable vibration between 3-4k rpm.
