Default New TPMS when putting new tires?

Hi,
Looking for some opinions.

I have to put 4 new tires on my 2009 997.2.
The wheels are currently still on the original TPMS sensors.
I've read online that the TPMS sensors run out of battery within 5-7 years.

Did anyone put brand new TPMS sensors in when putting on new tires (5-7 years old car) or waited until they failed?

Anyone tried any of these aftermarket brands or went OEM?
http://www.oewheelsllc.com/TPMS/make.../911/year/2009

Thanks

I kept the stock ones but had an 2011 and get free tire mounting.

You are basically betting the cost of the tire mounting. Low risk in my opinion.

No experience with after market but hear there are good and bad companies like anything else. I'm sure others will comment on the good aftermarkets.

I installed a set of the low cost (EON / Titan) option from OE wheels recently and have had no problems. They calibrated within the first 10 miles and have worked flawless since.

After this long, I'd recommend pro-actively changing them out. They will go bad during the life of these tires and while having a tire store break the beads on all four of your tires and replace the sensors isn't hard or particularly expensive, it does involve a trip (or four separate trips if you wait for each sensor to crap out individually) to the tire store and the annoyance of the car telling you you have a bad sensor until you do.

There's also the risk of scuffing or other damage to your wheels when the new guy at the store gets assigned the job.

Sensors on an '09 can get tricky. Read all the way through this thread for everything you need to know.

There is nothing wrong with aftermarket TPMS, but oewheels' website isn't the best and it's easy to get the wrong ones based on their search tool. Read through the thread and get the ones you need, not necessarily the ones their website picks.

...and if you pick up the wrong ones from OE based on their guidance OE will tell you to go pound sand.

That's not what they did for me. I had to talk to a manager but after i talked to him they got me straightened out and were very accommodating.

Mine lasted 6 years. Discount Tire replaced them when I had new tires installed. They "learned" in about 30 seconds and have been fine since 2014.

I'd replace 'em all now.

It may be worth your time and effort to replace them now while your having new rubber installed.

They have a tool that will tell you how much life is left in months (battery). Go from there.

Rennlist, Pelican parts, Autohous AZ all sell OEM unite for about $130 a corner.

They told me to eat the sand.....

If this were Yelp, I'd be one of those persons asking why 0 stars is not an option.

Many local tire shops can scan the TPMS for free and tell you the battery life. Your P-Dealer can also do the same thing. Just go when it's not busy.

My tire installer doesn't ask but just puts new sensors in when mounting tires. I'm fine with it and they are not expensive.

My car is a CPO till 10/18. IF the TPMS fail, is this covered by warranty?

I beleive they will replace them under CPO, but you should read your policy and see if they are excluded.

I'd also recommend replacing them. I have a 2009 with the original sensors and my Durametric scanner says I have 12 months of battery life remaining. I drive about 5k mils per year.

Definitely replace them a little early. The tires are critical in these cars. They are your only connection to the road surface and what they are do is very important, and any little bit of early warning is mission critical. Don't go cheap now. I leave the TPMS display up all the time as my default display, because it's so important.

I actually had to ORDER TPMS on my 2006 car as it didn't become standard until 2007. Recognize that the 997.2 TPMS systems take a different sender than the 997.1 cars. Any reasonably competent tire shop should know all of this.
