PDK and front diff service thread
I am bored at a Volleyball tournament. I just got the 997.2 service manual PDF. Together this leads to post like this. I have a 2009 Carrera 4 Cab with 20K miles that has had no PDK or diff service done. I read through the service manual and it does describe how to do everything. For all the 997's. which gets confusing because sometimes it lists the Carrera 4 with the Turbo and sometimes not.
But it does not give what fluids to use.
To make it even more confusing, it describes everything as an automatic transmission. And everything as automatic transmission fluid. It uses phrases like automatic transmission clutch fluid. And still uses the word tiptronic a lot. It describes the service for the tiptronic transmission also.
I am going to break this into several posts - and feel free to add insight and comments because at the end there will hopefully be a lot of correct information and include what we can do at home and what needs to be dealer done.
So here is what the maint schedule says
6yr/60K - change PDK clutch fluid
6yr/60K - change AWD controller oil
12yr/120K - change PDK tansmission oil
12yr/120K - change front differential oil
This is what I think I have learned reading though the manual:
The front diff has two oil compartments. On for differential fluid and one for clutch fluid.
The PDK has two compartments. One for the clutch fluid and one for the transmission fluid.
And then there is the mysterious Front final drive
Let's get started - and this post is as much for me so I can get it straight -
Front differential
The manual has a section WM3988TW - technical data on FRONT FINAL DRIVE TECHNICAL VALUES
It has 3 areas listed
1 - Front Axel final drive, with a filling capacity of 1.5L transmission oil
2 - Front axle final drive differential, with a filling capacity of .9L transmission oil
3 - Front axle final drive clutch, with a filing capacity of .9L clutch fluid
But it does not give what fluids to use.

Not sure what the front axle final drive is, but the procedure lists changing 1.5L of fluid on the transmission itself?
The front final drive differential is easy. It is the R side of the diff with a drain and fill plug.
Can anyone confirm that this takes the Porsche 75w90 fluid?
The front final drive clutch seems easy also. It's on the L side with a drain and fill plug
Can anyone confirm the front final drive clutch is the AWD controller? And it takes a 75W80 Porsche oil

OK. Lots of internet research and making progress.
So in 2009 there are lots of different combinations
The 996 and 997.1 AWD drive cars had a different AWD system - the clutch type that was good for performance, but no so much in bad weather (according to reports here) and it could be equipped with a manual trans or a tiptronic trans
the 997.1 turbo had a new front diff and different AWD system. This car could have a manual trans or a tiptronic. In 2009 it had the "new" AWD different with a differential and an AWD controller, and it had a "front final drive" on the transmission itself that had fluid that could be replaced.
the 997.2 cars had the PDK and the new front differential. Or it could have a manual. But the new front diff has the AWD controller and the differential.
Then if I am correct in 2010 the turbo got the PDK with new AWD system.

On 2010 the Turbo last three Mezger motor and converted to the 9A1 and all the associated drove line components.
There is a good press release detailing the changes introduced with the 997.2. It is available if you search this Forum.
If I don't commit a typo ...

should get you there directly.

I'm actually getting ready to do this on my 997.2 and understand your confusion. Anyone know of a good write-up or tech paper on changing fluids in the AWD system? I've determined from other posts that the AWD controller takes p/n 00004330300 which is 75w80 but I'm not real sure physically which drain plug this is. I'm listening...

I have a picture of it and a description of it. Will post more when I get to work.
And I am starting to decipher the repair manual more. With the above info confirmed it makes sense. It has a passage on automatic transmission fluid change Carrera and right below it automatic transmission change Turbo. One describes the PDK and the other the tiptronic. But the titles are the same.

I changed the fluid in both on my 2010 C4S last year. It's not too hard to do assuming you use an oil pump to get the new fluid into the cases or something similar. The fluid I drained out looked new, but of course you don't know until you drop it.

I think the way they are using the terms, the front final drive is the assembly of the front differential (axles come out of it) and the front AWD clutch assembly / AWD controller (between the transmission and the front diff). You can take them out as a unit. Each section has its own oil, each takes a bit less than 1L. The diff has a plug on the bottom, fill plug on the right, takes Mobil 1 75W90 or similar. The AWD controller has a drain plug on the bottom, fill plug on the right on a weird angle pointing the plug forward. It takes Mobilfluid LT 75w-80 - Porsche part # 00004330300 which Suncoast has: http://suncoastparts.com/product/00004330300.html

Boy is life complicated. Called the dealer to get the PDK clutch done. New Porsche recommendation is 12yr/120K. PDK clutch fluid rec maint is 12yr/120K. So when Porsche rec service interval changes is it retro active? For example, is the oil change interval still 10-20K miles on the 996 and 997's. Or does Porsche not care after warranty expires? The reason I ask is that my car still is under warranty.

Do you know the difference between the 997.1 and 997.2 systems? I thought that 997.1 also has the final drive that requires the different oil and smaller total amount for drain/fill, and then the front diff uses the same fluid as the rear transaxle.
I would like to do both the front diff and the AWD controller on my 997.1 C4 and so would LOVE to get this figured out. The info out there is a little hard to decipher...

Looking at the manual for the 997.1, it looks like there's only one oil reservoir that takes 1.5L for the front drive components of the 4WD system. It looks like the drain plug is at the lower rear of the front diff assembly and the fill plug is at the front side near where one of the axles comes out. However I don't have a 997.1 and can't confirm that.

Great, thank you for that info! That helps a lot. It looks like the AWD controller fluid and the extra compartment in the front diff is for the 997.1 turbo and not the 997.1 4/4s models. Then it appears to have been adopted on the 997.2 models.
