Default 997 :: Professional Reviews

Hi folks,

I've assembled a list of professional reviews (magazines, etc.) of various 997.1 and 997.2 cars, grouped below as follows:

General
  • Books
  • 997 Broad Overviews and General Buyers Guides
997.1 Carreras
  • 997.1 Carreras in General
  • 997.1 Carrera Coupes
  • 997.1 Carrera Targas & Cabriolets
  • Modified 997.1 Carreras
997.2 Carreras
  • 997.2 Carreras in General
  • 997.2 Carrera Coupes
  • 997.2 Carrera Targas, Cabriolets & Speedsters
  • Modified 997.2 Carreras
  • 997.2 Miscellaneous
Turbos
  • 997.x Turbos in General
  • 997.1 Turbos
  • 997.2 Turbos
  • Modified 997 Turbos
GT Models
  • 997.x GT3s
  • 997.x GT2s
  • Multiple 997 GT3/GT2 Models
  • Modified 997 GT3/GT2 Models
  • Factory Racecars

If the tests included their own independent performance measurements (not just repeating the official numbers from Porsche), I added them to the attached tables.

I'm sure I've missed some reviews. So if you know of any professional reviews that should be added, please share (including the link), and I'll update this post accordingly.

Books

Grant Neal - "The Definitive Guide to Porsche 997 series 911"
  • Covers all of the .1 and .2 models (Carreras, Turbos, etc.)
  • Only available as a Kindle book
    • But worth the ~$20 (~£15) cost in my opinion...
Adrian Streather - "Porsche 997 2004-2012 (Essential Companion)"
  • Covers all of the .1 and .2 models (Carreras, Turbos, etc.)
  • However... this 997 book doesn't seem to be his best example based on these notes
    • There was errors in the specs, wrong diagrams, etc.
    • While Streather has done some really excellent books in the past (e.g. the 964 and 993 books), I can't recommend this edition based on the above findings
Jake Raby - "997 Torque Book"

997 Broad Overviews and General Buyers Guides

Broader articles/videos that may cover multiple models (Carreras, Turbos, etc.), used price analysis, etc. For more model and/or generation specific articles/videos (including model specific buyers guides), see the sections below.

    1. Inspection/service process before putting a 997.2 C2S (PDK) on sale - YouTube
      • Breaking the rules as this is not exactly an unbiased video, but it's a genuinely interesting tour of inspecting/servicing a 75K mile 997.2 before putting it on sale
      • It was then advertised for sale at £37K - https://www.friendsgreenporsche.com/...-carrera-s-pdk

997.2 Carrera Coupes

997.2 Carrera reviews
997.2 Carrera S reviews
  • Auto Motor und Sport - C2S Coupe (PDK) at the Nurburgring - http://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/s...e-1041459.html (Deadlink)
    • As of December 2019, the above link isn't working, but won't delete for now incase it's restored in the future
    • Here's what the article did contain...
      • Auto Motor und Sport have lapped cars at Nürburgring Nordschleife for many years - https://www.auto-motor-und-sport.de/...en/supertests/
      • Until 2015, laps were mostly set by veteran 'Ring master Horst von Saurma, then Christian Gebhardt took over
      • Horst lapped the Nurburgring in a 997.2 C2S PDK in 7m50s with the following specs:
        • Michelin Pilot Sport Cup N0 tires, PCCB brakes, PDK, Sport Chrono Plus
      • Per Chris Harris' review in 997 Miscellaneous below, Porsche said the lap time of a 997.2 C2S w/PDK on stock tires is 7m58s

  • JayEmm on Cars - Reviewed the C2S Coupe on two occasions:
    1. C2S (PDK) - YouTube

    • Todd & Brian provided their experiences diagnosing and repairing PDK issues (997.2, Panamera, etc.)
    • There wasn't any additional technical detail than already discussed in PV997's excellent thread Guide to Repairing a PDK Transmission, but it's interesting to hear a professional shop's actual experience working on these problems
    • As regards failure patterns, their observations to date were...
      • Generally speaking, the failure rates remain relatively low
      • There's no obvious correlation with mileage, usage (e.g. track-rats vs. Sunday drivers), model, etc.
      • But when there is a failure, the most common ones they've seen are Distance Sensors / Electronics, and Clutch Rings (to a lesser degree)
    • As a general rule, they recommend an accelerate service schedule if you're tracking your car, or have modified it for high-HP applications

Kinda cool to see that Road and Track was able to whip an 05 S to a 3.9 60 and 12.3 quarter mile....

As regards that particular car, I don’t doubt R&T achieved those numbers.

But it is a bit of an outlier as its 60-100 time, and its ĵ-mile trap speed are all higher than the other .1 C2S cars as well. Either its engine was a stronger-than-average example, or the car was lighter than the others for some reason, or maybe the driver was especially brutal...

On the engine front, there are variations from engine to engine (manufacturing tolerances, etc.). Now over the years, improved process controls tend to narrow the range over time, but it still exists. There was an interesting example in the August 2000 edition of Excellence Magazine. Alois Ruf (owner of RUF) commented on 3.4L 996 crate-engines from Porsche at that time (issue #95, p68):
  • "We have tested dozens of 996 engines now and seen outputs between 285 and 300 horsepower."
  • "We claim 310 hp for the Boxster 3400S, so if a new 911 engine out of its create doesn not make 300 hp to start with, we will find out why and rectify it"
  • "If that means stripping it down and blueprinting it, then that is what we will do."
So they were seeing 292.5 hp ħ 7.5 hp (~5% total) variation on the crate engines...

So while this thread is about independent test results, here's a few official Porsche acceleration numbers for the .1 and .2 Coupes, and the sources I pulled from...

My point of view:

The Times of carrera S Tip S s are not bad !
By the way, I drive with c2s tip s with "sports package" and I can testify that the sports package significantly improves the "map".

I'm happy with the results =)

As regards comparative lap time, both Motor Trend and Car and Driver have accumulated a large number of lap times at Laguna Seca and VIR respectively. The following tables show how the 997 models stack up against other Porsche models:

What stands out for me is the effectiveness of the Cayman chassis...
