Default Sport Steering Wheel for 997.1

Has anyone had any experience with these? Thoughts? Also, can this be a DIY? I have a 6MT, no steering wheel controls.

Many have them installed. The process is pretty simple. The biggest gotcha is matching the airbag style to the steering wheel style. This means 997.1 triangle airbags only fit on 997.1 triangle style steering wheels. Same thing for 997.1 round style (sport). I believe 991 steering wheels can be retrofitted too. You can add or delete multifunction too, but the sport wheel does not support MF.

The seller is Dallas Custom, pretty well known: http://www.dallassteeringwheel.com/
Another seller is DCT Motor Sports (I used them, very happy): http://www.dctms.com/Products.html

Most have a core exchange program. Or you can keep your original and outright buy the new one. Plenty of threads here on this topic. Also check out 6speedonline for more of the DIY's.

edited to add a picture of my wheel during the swap

Oooo, what steering wheel is that in your pic @semicycler? (the one on the right that is). Love the flat bottom and hand gips!

OEM is on the left and was shipped back for the core deposit refund. The new one on the right is a modified OEM one done by DCT Motorsports - see my notes above the picture. Try this link:

I've heard only good things about their work and have wrestled with having mine wrapped (slightly thicker) in the stone grey leather to match my interior or go with Alcantara - thankfully it's taken me several years to really consider it.

Slight sidetrack - One question about the color band - I get the aesthetic and understand the "reason" people cite for doing it - but in the case of the sport wheel - isn't the spoke at the bottom of the wheel just as useful a reference as a color strip at the top?

I realize I'm not a professional race car driver, and really not a drifty-type either, but cannot imagine a situation where I would have the wheel spinning so rapidly through my open fingers that I would need a bright yellow strip as a reference point to get me "back to center" in a way that "a spoke on the bottom and the them rests left and right wouldn't also make perfect sense.

I figure if I can't see the tach, the wheel is upside down.

Am I viewing this wrong?

Yes that's the one, with the red color band option

For me it's cosmetic only. Breaks up all the black on the interior without going too crazy with deviated stitching or painted trim pieces to achieve the same effect.

So long as I get a like for like replacement (triangle for triangle), I shouldn't have issues with the air bag, correct? Just a straight forward switch?

Oh, and one more thing. Is there that big of a difference between the 1/16" thickness vs 1/8"?

Yup, another +1 for DCT. I did their carbon and perforated leather, thicker grips, flat bottom, and MA carbon Y-trim. Get to enjoy it every time I drive my car, which can't be said for every mod.

Thanks!

It's a full leather interior...but the armrest although in leather, does not have the crest. It's on my list to swap out but looking at some other things that will purge my wallet!

Huge difference! At least in my opinion. I originally went with the Dallas 1/8, way too big. I like a sporty wheel and it just seemed like an oversized wheel. I then went with the 1/16 and liked it much better.

Correct. You will swap over your current airbag, trim pieces, and any existing steering wheel electronics in the like for like scenario. It works with the flat bottomed ones too as the airbag still fits. It's just the wheel itself that is changed.

Round to triangle or triangle to round need the matching airbag so the upgrade cost is higher. And there are some scenarios where the steering wheel electronics only fit on one style wheel so they cannot be swapped over or added (not everything offered on triangle wheels fit on the round wheels, MF controls is one example).
