if you're going to get a set of dedicated winter wheels, i like the michelin alpins. but other options available (e.g., blizzaks, etc.)

Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 N-Spec N0(Porsche)
Simply incredible grip on snow. And perform very well on pavement.

With 19" rims I could not find a substitute to Porsche recommended Pirellis. Got them from Tire Rack.

I went with Pirelli SottoZero's on a set of 997.1 turbo rims .... these are fantastic as my winter wheel set on my 2010 C4S Cab, my year-round DD here in Chicagoland

Where in the North Shore do you live? Picture looks eerily similar to my house in Glencoe!

Any suggestions on where to get winter tires? I called local tire shops (the Exchange, Cassidy) none of them had ANY winter tires in stock for the 19" OEM wheels. Loeber did but don't feel like paying what they are asking for. Car has never been driven in winter so maybe it's for the best, but sucks seeing it in my garage on a tender without any love for 4 months.

2009 C2S 104K coupe

I have the Alpins on now and I like them... although I wouldn't call their snow grip fantastic, they are fine for me. The Blizzaks I had on my old Boxster S were just short of fantastic in the snow but smooshy and noisy as heck. My Dunlops were very very good. I had very bad experience with Pirelli snows although I hear they are a different design now.

Peace

It never ceases to amaze me how small the worrld is .... I'm in Glencoe as well, over on Forest Avenue. Are you in the same part of town? If I were a bettin' man, based on your profile pic I'd say you're over on Franklin - am I close? Either way, I'll have to keep a closer eye out for your cream 997 around town and on the Edens

I've generally bought all my tires from Tire Rack and had them delivered to and installed by my indy. For Winters, I always used Blizaak's on my 645 Ci Cab but switched to Sottozero's for my 911. I always bought them early in the season as the 19" inventory is generally pretty small at most shops, and the few times I needed to replace one during the winter months I always had problems sourcing them when I needed them! You may want to check with Just Tires (at Lake Cook & Waukegan), although they may only have Dunlops. Otherwise, take a look at Tire Rack for the best selection of Winters

I have a set of 18in wheels, tires and sensors for a 997.2. The wheels/tires have maybe 500 miles on them. This combo will clear the brakes on a S model. Cheap eBay colored crest caps also included.

I use Blizzaks on 18" rims. Very happy with them -- my 2011 C2S is ironically the most agile, best-handling vehicle I have for snow and ice.

I went with 19" because there seemed to be more out there at the time than 18". I ended up buying used identical wheels as a just in case I pranged one, I had a backup in the garage. here is my adventure hunting for winter vs snow tires.
