Oil Temp/Oil Pressure/Oil level - not working? help please?
 

So today I picked up my 2005 C2 base with 27k miles on it, had since new, from a renown Porsche body/paint specialist this morning to take care of a minor dent and scratch on the driver side qtr right at the bottom of the stone guard which was a result of road debri on the turnpike. While driving to work, after 12 miles or so, my oil temp gauge goes to zero and i get the notice "Oil Temp gauge malfunction" about 20 mins later my oil pressure gauge starts to look funny then pins to 5 while sitting in traffic idling. So oil temp at 0, pressure at 5 at idle and i am thinking the worse, although everything is running fine and no noise for the next 30 minutes and 5 miles of stop and go until I get to work. Went out at lunch to check oil level and the indicator also indicates "Oil level malfunction"; so all three oil gauges are not working. Just had the oil changed a month and a few hundred miles ago and no leaks noticed in garage, etc. Bodyshop did not undo the battery, as i understand and wiring to dash is on the passenger side (dent guy was in the driver side qtr). My indy tells me could be a simple computer reset (or not). If it is the sending unit- any idea the cost for new part and labor and what I am in for or what it could be alternatively - thanks guys.

If the car sat a while there are a couple of possible explanations.

Might as well get this out of the way: Mice. You have to carefully check the car over for any rodent sign and damage. Look on top of the engine for nesting trash. And look on top of the plastic underbody panels.

If no signs of mice or any gnawing rodents then be sure the battery is fully charged. The battery can go flat. Often in a shop the car is left unlocked and maybe even a door is left ajar, a door, or a front trunk lid or the engine compartment lid.

Couple this with the engine getting started just to move the car about, all of this can run down the battery. The battery can run down anyhow. Depending upon the battery a month's lack of use might lower the battery's charge.

After you are sure the battery is fully charged carefully follow the owners manual and disconnect the battery for a while. Then just as carefully reconnect the battery.

If you have a MY/radio that requires a radio code be sure you have this *before* you disconnect the battery.

After you connect the battery do an E-Gas calibration. Steps should be in the owners manual. From memory: With your foot off the gas pedal through out this procedure with the key off turn the key to the on position. Leave on for at least 60 seconds. Turn the key off for at least 10 seconds.

You'll have to reset the window limits. With the window all the way up press the lower button and continue to press it until the window is all the way down. Release the button then press and hold the raise button until the window is all the way up. Continue to hold for at least 5 seconds. Repeat for the other window.

If a good battery and a battery disconnect/reconnect doesn't resurrect the oil temp, oil pressure and oil level sensors/readouts not sure where you go from here.

Thanks for the advice Mac. On the way home, about halfway, everything started working again. Shut the car off while waiting for my son to follow me to Indy for drop off and did the oil check and it read fine. Then, while driving the oil pressure gauge pinned to 5, so something is going on - will see what my Indy has to say. I'll make sure to have him go thru the low hanging stuff like you mentioned.
