Well at least it can be somewhat managed. Replacing the bearing is a good start. If you want to talk about a pain in the *** ownership experience you should look into a n54 engined bmw. It's not a car it's a hobby.

Mordeeb...I disagree with your comment "is such a problem on so many cars." The actual number of failures is quite small. The bearing had three generations of design...and the failures of any of those design variations are not consistent in terms of milage, track use, or environmental issues. That indicates not a basic design failure of the bearing but rather a combination of events.

I would venture that 95% or more of all IMS bearings (of any generation) that are replaced proactively reveal a stock bearing that was in excellent condition. And of those that have not been changed, almost all original bearings are still on the road and working as designed to.

On the other hand...one has to be very careful about who changes out your original bearing and what they use. Some of those aftermarket fixes are also failing and it is probably due to poor installation.

Personally, I will never, ever, never buy another M96/97 engine car. Between IMS and cylinder scoring it just isn't worth the risk.

I never liked the stock suspension in my 3.6l 997. It didn't have PASM. The front end on my car would lift at highway speeds. I went to coil overs eventually. Is PASM a must have? Maybe?

PASM is nice to have for sure. My 996 has M030 from the factory which in my opinion is silly stiff for the street. My Cayman had PASM, and my 991 S comes with it standard.

As the owner of one with a new engine I'm in complete agreement. If mine got totalled I might try to pick up a 997 roller with a shot M96 engine and swap mine into it, as it's an RND with nickies and IMS Solution and probably as durable as a Metzger at this point, but otherwise I would go only for a .2 or perhaps a TT (GT3 is a bit too race-car for my taste). Once bitten twice shy.

And on the sticker I don't get the "A1 Black Top" option. It's a black coupe. I've never seen a coupe with a different color top than the body.

I'd offer $32500, pending a clean inspection. Then when you find out what it needs $ (if anything) based on the PPI, plus the cost to replace the IMS, you can come back with an updated offer.

yeah, there are also like 2010+ boxsters for even less so its a tough call.

I have a 997.1 2005 made in 4/2005 (no IMS issue) with 88k on it and bought it 2 months ago for 26k and its a cabriolet.

1 owner vehicle good vehicle history too.
