Default Should i trade my 997 for Macan GTS?

I have a 2006 997 4S manual cabrio and love it. I also have a 2 year old that can't ride in it because he is still rear facing and probably will be for a while yet. Was at the dealer and struggling with the idea of trading my 4S for a really nice Macan GTS. What do you guys think? Will I regret it?

Have you driven the Macan? Everyone I know with one loves it. If the choice is driven by family considerations, then IMO you have to do it. You can always get back into a 911 when your son is old enough for that...T

I have a 2009 C2S and my wife drives a 2015 Macan S. We test drove a 2017 Macan GTS last weekend and there is quite a difference in the torque between her S and the GTS. Both great vehicles, quick, great road handling, smooth, great PDK tranny, etc. If you haven't driven one you owe it to yourself to do so. The Macan S or GTS would definitely be on my short list if I were looking for a new vehicle.

Trade the 911 for an SUV because you have a kid??? My little one loved riding in my C2 from the day we flipped his seat into forward facing position, which was right around 2.

The Macan is a great car, the BEST small SUV out there. I test drove one thinking the same thing, and there is NO WAY I personally would do it. Whereas a 997 can be steered with throttle even at low speeds, the Macan is simply dull to drive (aside from the amazing PDK and accompanying exhaust note). After test driving the Macan GTS, I also test drove a CPO Panamera GTS (same price), and that's a MUCH better choice if you really need more backseat room and don't want to keep two cars. BUT what you should really do is keep your 997 and get a CPO X1 xDrive35i if you want an SUV or an A7 if you prefer cars.

I just did a test drive in the Macan GTS and it is spectacular compared to anything else in its class, but... it will never replace a 911. Like some others have said, keep the 911 and get something older CPO.

Had same dilemma. Fortunate enough to be able to keep the 997 and get the wife a Macan GTS for the baby mobile.

The Macan is not a 997. The Macan IS a Porsche. Probably the best all-around SUV I've driven for OUR needs. Traded in our Cayenne GTS on the Macan GTS and love it! Drive one, you'll likely understand.

Best of luck!

As others have said, you can't replace a sports car with a sporty SUV and expect not to make huge compromises. If at all possible, you should consider getting a 2nd vehicle to handle the kid hauling duties. Doesn't have to be anything exciting (or expensive)... just something to get the job done. I am assuming that you or your wife already have one other child hauling vehicle, so if you feel you need something other than the 911 to cover those times when you have the kid and the other vehicle isn't available, I would not suggest you get rid of your 911 for those infrequent moments when that happens, but rather just pick up a 3rd vehicle if at all feasible.

Now if you just want to get something different and want to try the Macan out for awhile, sure. Personally I'm not a big fan of the compact SUV concept (though clearly a LOT of people disagree with me). I just don't think they do anything particularly well and don't really provide a ton of space or utility that you couldn't get elsewhere. Though of the segment, the Macan is the best out there.

The Macan is the best performing CUV in the segment. But the thing is -- are you going to use launch control from a stop light or take high speed corners, with your kids in the back?

I have a 3-series wagon for my twins in rear facing seats. Plus a double stroller fits in cargo area. That's all the car I need. Being a US-market wagon, it's "only" got a 230-hp straight six, but even then I wouldn't push the car to redline with kids onboard. So I'm in the separate sports car, separate family car camp, no "performance" CUV for me.

I think you will regret it and will soon be purchasing another 911. They're only rear facing for a short while. I have your same car and take all three of my kids with me any chance I get and they love it. Something special about the 997 that isn't present in the suv's despite carrying the same badge. FWIW, my 2 year old (almost 3) sits in a booster seat in the back beside his 5 year old brother, and their sister rides up front.

There are a bunch of good, utilitarian SUVs you could buy new for the cost of trading your 997 on a new Macan GTS. If you're willing to go with a used SUV the list gets longer and includes some higher-end ones, plus will cost you less in depreciation if you sell it in a couple or three years. The depreciation on the 997 is at a low, so keeping it really isn't costing much.

I considered trading my 997 GTS for a Macan GTS when my son was born two months ago. I stopped thinking about it after five minutes and bought an additional two year old CR-V instead.

Because your kid is already 2, you will quickly regret not having a 911, especially a manual cab. I like to say, there is no substitute. Am I on to something? You will love a brand new Macan GTS for what it is and what all goes into a new car honeymoon stage. But assuming you can have more than one car, keep the 911.

Do whatever takes to keep 911. Buy a ford or Hyundai for however long needed. Do not go 911less. If you do mental instability will occur.
