I grew up in one of those small towns on 281. It was old folks with German accents, ranchers, etc. Now it's a bedroom community, which is a major contributor to the traffic on 281. Ironically, I moved into the city (still less than 1/4 mile from 281) to escape the traffic. 281 is great once you're North of Sprng Branch.

The only thing that I see that you're doing wrong is heading back to S Tejas instead of heading north out of Tempe and finding US 89 North through Utah!

How right you are! I remember a stretch of 89 between Yarnell and Prescott that was epic. Unfortunately, I was in a rental pick-up!
